The Service Employees International Union represents over 100,000 workers across Washington State fighting for better wages, working conditions, and justice on the job for thousands of union and not-yet-union workers in our industries. The SEIU State Council coordinates work across unions representing health and long-term care, education, property services, and others to make Washington a place where all families and communities can thrive.

The Director is responsible for the execution of the program and administrative functions of the State Council. The person in this position reports to the Executive Board and supports the development and execution of political and legislative campaigns for SEIU in Washington State.

Acting in collaboration with SEIU Washington State Local Union leaders, Local Union staff, State Council staff, and SEIU International staff, the Director’s responsibilities and duties, include the following:

Coordinate across local and international unions

  1. State Council “Work Group” Coordination. Coordinates and chairs a standing work group of local union political, legislative and communications staff, setting the agenda, scheduling guests, and following up on commitments.
  2. Cross Local Coordination. Coordinate political, legislative, and issue programs and plans with assigned staff of each SEIU Local in Washington.
  3. Partners and Coalitions. Provide unified connection to community organizations and coordinate financial support. Serve as SEIU representative to specific coalitions with political allies and partners; as assigned.
  4. International Union Coordination. Serve as a representative of the State Council to SEIU political staff nationally and WA staff representative on Federal campaigns—liaison between locals and the IU including applying for funding for special projects. Support political and legislative campaigns of local unions
  5. Political Campaigns. Monitor Council political spending. Act as communication coordinator at election time. Support field campaigns and member education campaigns. Engage in political efforts alongside SEIU members.
  6. Candidate Endorsements. Coordinate joint local endorsement process, including maintaining an automated master endorsement process tracker for all locals. Coordinate member-led presidential endorsement process amongst locals
  7. Issue Campaigns. Develop project-based plans for approval by the Executive Board. Act as coordinator for these multi-local campaigns (i.e., immigration, census, racial equity).
  8. Training and Development. Coordinate joint local training and development to support local capacity.

Administrative tasks:

  1. Calendars. Maintain a master calendar of local union & community events, including annual meetings, training, and other priorities.
  2. Board Meetings. Provide planning and preparation for Council Board meetings, scheduling guest speakers, and Audio/Visual support for meetings and presentations.
  3.  Resource Administration: Administer and monitor budgets and resources of the council based on approved plans. Oversee the work of the Finance, Compliance, and Operations Manager.
  4. Communications. Maintain communication with principal officers from each local regarding progress, obstacles, partner work, etc.
  5. Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Three to five years of political experience with one or more of the following types of organizations: labor unions, progressive issue advocacy organizations, community organizations, political campaigns, or progressive elected officials.
  • Proven ability to support senior-level local union staff and the Executive Board.
  • Experience with organizational development across multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience in and knowledge of all stages of political campaigns, including endorsements, field, and outreach.
  • Excellent analytical and writing ability.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial justice
  • Computer literacy, including knowledge of PowerPoint.
  • A successful candidate will have experience working with Locals on multiple levels and demonstrate a commitment to the mission, goals, and tactics of SEIU.

Salary Range
The salary for this position ranges between $85,000 and $100,000, depending on experience. Benefits include fully paid health benefits including vision and dental, generous vacation time, paid retirement, and cell phone reimbursement.
