Temporary Organizer
Federal Division

Based in Alexandria, VA


This is a temporary position not to exceed December 31, 2024. Seeking to fill this position immediately.

The National Association of Government Employees, SEIU, seeks to fill an Organizer position within the Federal Division in Alexandria, Virginia. This position will include aspects of both Organizing and Representative duties and be responsible for successfully managing all aspects of an organizing campaign. To accomplish this, we need a highly driven committed individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills, who can effectively solve problems, which include conducting one-on-one, in person site visits, and phone and web-based engagement with workers. The Organizer reports to the Director of the Federal Division.


  • Conduct broad and intensive outreach.
  • Build one-on-one relationships, identify, recruit, and develop leaders.
  • Conduct individual and group meetings to move organizing campaigns forward.
  • Engage, motivate, and mobilize workers to take action.
  • Plan and implement actions and events to support organizing efforts.
  • Comprehend healthcare work life, provide training, governance structures, terminology, and roles within hospital operations.
  • Be well versed in labor law specifically related to regulations governing union recognition.
  • Perform basic campaign research, including probing, list building and worksite mapping.
  • Play a major leadership role in the institution to create an effective Labor Union movement to strengthen the local union leadership.
  • Ability to independently manage difficult and complex issues in labor relations matters.
  • Ability to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to establish rapport with and organize members in widely diversified ethnic, social, and economic groups.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Must be able to prioritize multiple tasks in a demanding environment, successfully work independently, and meet goals and deadlines.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience and Educational Requirements:

  • At least two years of experience as a union organizer required.
  • Knowledge of and understanding of unions and the labor movement, union organizing practices and basic labor law.
  • Healthcare experience preferred, but not required.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Strong ability to connect and communicate with people of diverse backgrounds in pursuit of a common goal.
  • Ability to think critically to manage conflict and adversarial situations.
  • Ability to work independently and possess a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to quickly incorporate feedback and direction from your supervisor.


  • Work is performed in a variety of worksite locations. Regular travel is required. Occasional overnight travel is required, usually less than one-third (1/3) of the work time.
  • Flexible working outside normal business hours, ability to work in the evenings/weekends as needed.
  • Must be able to transport and lift a variety of boxes, bags and materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
