Position: Lead Campaigner in USW Strategic Campaigns department
Location: Pittsburgh, PA based at the USW International headquarters with frequent travel

Largest industrial union in North America seeks experienced and creative campaigners interested in leading membership mobilization programs and strategic corporate campaigns.

The USW Strategic Campaigns department is responsible for developing and coordinating programs that build membership solidarity and support collective bargaining across a range of industries. The campaigns vary – from small-scale, local union driven contract campaigns to heavily resourced, nationwide corporate campaigns.

This position involves:

  • Working with staff, local union leaders and rank-and-file members from various industries to plan and lead mobilization campaigns that build solidarity to win fair labor contracts
  • Developing creative campaign strategies and tactics responsive to a variety of situations from tough bargaining at a single plant to high-profile, nationwide campaigns with multiple locals at a single employer
  • Leading in-person, full-day and multi-day trainings with union members in various settings
  • Conceptualizing and implementing creative actions
  • Writing campaign materials, including corporate communications, campaign updates, research reports and flyers
  • Conducting leverage research to inform strategies and tactics
  • Preparing local unions for potential labor disputes and providing on-the-ground support during disputes (strikes and lockouts)
  • Coordinating with other USW staff and departments, including bargainers, servicing reps, communications and organizing departments
  • Planning events and meetings with union members and staff
  • Mentoring and sharing skills with department staff and interns


  • At least 6 years of experience in the labor movement or similar including experience leading contract campaigns
  • Experience developing and leading trainings and educational programs
  • Ability to write effective campaign materials quickly
  • Ability to conduct, analyze and report on corporate leverage research
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with union leadership, staff and rank-and-file members
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, think ahead and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to learn, take direction and work collaboratively in teams
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours when needed, including weekends and evenings
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and similar tools, such as Google Drive
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Frequent travel required across the U.S. and occasionally Canada
  • Proficiency in another language, particularly Spanish or French, a plus

Salary - Salary range is $72,000 – $111,000, with placement on the range commensurate with experience. This is a bargaining unit position. Generous benefits provided by the employer including healthcare, dental, vision and retirement benefits.
