The Massachusetts Society of Professors (MSP) is an established labor union representing nearly 1800 faculty and librarians at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. We seek a full-time Staff member to advance the ambitious goals of our members by serving as an internal organizer, union representative, and office staff.

In addition to handling grievances and working with individual bargaining unit members to resolve workplace problems, we are dedicated to winning excellent benefits for our members, protecting and enhancing faculty and librarians’ professional rights at work, and taking the lead on issues that affect the lives of working people and the quality of education at the University and across the state.

The MSP is affiliated with the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) and National Educators Association (NEA).

Position Location: Amherst, Massachusetts (in-person only)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist members in resolving workplace concerns through contract interpretation and enforcement
  • Creatively organize to resolve workplace problems and to support union negotiations
  • Develop and implement organizing plans to increase membership; persuade faculty and librarians to join the union
  • Increase engagement and mobilization of membership and activists in union initiatives
  • Train member activists and support leaders and union committees in their work including making arrangements for meetings and events
  • Conduct new member orientations
  • Update/develop literature for orientations, newsletters, and union communications
  • Maintain social media and union website
  • Provide general office support, including database management, phone and email communications


  • Union knowledge; contract negotiation/enforcement and organizing experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment and to ask for help often
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suites, Google Drive, social media, graphics ability preferred
  • Well organized and detail-oriented
  • Self-starter with strong work ethic
  • Experience working with faculty and staff in an academic setting highly desirable

Compensation and Benefits:
Pay, commensurate with experience, starting at $70,000 per year. Excellent comprehensive health and dental plan and retirement plan. Paid vacation time, sick time, personal days, and a generous paid holiday schedule.
