Business Agent / Labor Representative

Based in Laporte, IN

 

Teamsters Local 135 is a dynamic, militant, rank-and-file driven labor union affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

We represent a diverse range of workers who work primarily in the private sector. Industries represented include manufacturing, warehousing, construction, airline, and parcel delivery.

Our geography covers the state of Indiana, and parts of Ohio, Illinois, and Michigan,

Our members value having a voice in their workplace and strong relationships with their representatives. Our Representatives make regular visits to job sites to build strong relationships with members, resolve shop-floor issues, and stand together to take on bosses.

Representatives assist members in improving their workplace, gaining the respect of employers, and winning competitive wages and benefits in the contract negotiations process.

Local 135 is seeking an experienced Business Agent / Labor Representative with the following responsibilities:

  • Process grievances, present at statewide panels, and prepare for arbitration
  • Negotiate and administer Collective Bargaining Agreements
  • Interpret and administer complex legal and contract language
  • Mediate and resolve disputes
  • Coordinate and maintain a shop stewards base, including recruitment, training and support of shop stewards and activists.
  • Attend and lead regular unit meetings
  • Internal and external organizing, including identifying and developing rank and file leaders and building committees;
  • Prepare leaflets, bulletins, etc. to maintain regular member communication

Requirements Include:

  • Experience as a Business Representative/Organizer or proven ability to perform the duties of the position
  • Strong effective written and verbal skills in a variety of forms, including emails, letters, grievances, settlement agreements, contract proposals, flyers, petitions and newsletter articles
  • Effective time management, ability to work independently and as a group to handle multiple cases and collective bargaining agreements while meeting deadlines
  • Computer skills and proficiency in basic programs including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work non-traditional hours including nights and weekends
  • Demonstrated success negotiating contracts, processing grievances and organizing members
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire members to develop into leaders and participate in union programs including events, representation, bargaining and organizing
  • Valid driver’s license;
  • Demonstrate commitment to the labor movement and social justice

Local 135 offers a competitive salary based on experience, benefits including fully paid family healthcare and a pension, diversity and a culture of teamwork. Starting salary is dependent on experience.
