Communications Specialist

Based out of Oakland, CA

 

The Engineers and Scientists of California Local 20, International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, AFL-CIO & CLC is a democratic labor union representing more than 8,000 workers throughout California. The Local is headquartered in Oakland and has an experienced and united Executive Board. ESC Local 20 members are highly skilled professionals employed principally at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (“PG&E”), Kaiser Permanente, private and public health care facilities, local and federal government agencies, and legal non-profits.

The Communications Specialist (Program Coordinator) reports to the ESC Local 20 Executive Director, or designee. They will lead and manage daily/weekly tasks and longer-term projects to craft the identity and promote the work of the Union to both external and internal audiences. The Communications Specialist will identify and write content for the Union website and publications, coordinate and oversee the Local’s website and social media channels; produce online and print publications and video; and seek to place stories with and respond to queries from the media. The Communications Specialist may also be asked to conduct in-depth research projects in support of strategic initiatives. The communications specialist must be comfortable with the ever-changing nature of communication technologies and will lead the effort to put in place appropriate tools and strategies to showcase the full range of Union's work and to assist in organizing, mobilization and educational efforts.

Duties include:

  • Develop, execute, and oversee print and electronic communications for the Union: newsletter, web materials, social media content, fact sheets, press kit materials, leaflets, talking points, reports, video, etc.
  • Develop strategies and tactics for facilitating effective communications
  • Oversight and coordination of union website
  • Coordination of email and digital content distribution in support of communications programming
  • Oversee the creation of a Union video production program to highlight our initiatives and accomplishments
  • Manage relationships with relevant press, vendors, organizations
  • Evaluate and analyze communications efforts to measure impact, identify opportunities, and implement improvements
  • Research in support of union's strategic initiatives
  • Responsible for maintaining consistent, professional voice and style of all published content across many platforms
  • Collaborate with members and staff to get pictures, quotes, and video clips that bring worker voices into campaign materials
  • Craft and execute member training on telling their stories and overall communications best practices
  • Provide proactive media outreach and field inquiries from the news media; prepare workers and allies for contact with news media
  • Manage and grow a robust email and digital action program

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Prior experience with website design and management and video production a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent writing, editing, reporting, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Union staff, officers, and membership.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of people.
  • Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.
  • Strong knowledge of social media tools
  • Ability to take initiative and to handle competing priorities.
  • Prior experience with web site design and video production software a plus.
  • Commitment to social justice and the mission of the labor movement.

Compensation is highly competitive, and step placement is dependent on experience and qualifications. Initial salary range is $118,456 to $137,113. Outstanding benefits package includes 100% employer-paid family medical and prescription coverage. ESC provides a 401K/Pension employer contribution of 21% of the annual base salary. The position has generous time-off benefits that include vacation and compensatory time-off provisions.

The Communications Specialist will be based out of the ESC Local 20 office in Oakland. The job may require some travel. Work can include long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends. Proof of adequate personal insurance is defined as at least $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$100,000 property coverage. A valid Driver’s License and insurability are a requirement for this position. Willing to complete a background check.
