Summer 2024 Internship

Based in Union, NJ

 

The Council of New Jersey State College Locals, AFT, AFL-CIO is comprised of 11 Locals and represents over 10,000 faculty, adjunct faculty, librarians, and professional staff at the following institutions of higher education: The College of New Jersey, Kean University, Montclair State University, New Jersey City University and the A. Harry Moore School, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Stockton University, Rowan University, Thomas Edison State University and William Paterson University. Our mission is to protect the rights and privileges of the employees we represent, to help provide a quality, affordable and accessible education to students attending our State Colleges and Universities, to advance the interests of public employees and to act in solidarity with the labor movement. Interested applicants should have an interest in labor and education, and possess strong interpersonal, problem-solving, research, and writing skills.

Job Summary
Under the direction of the Staff Representatives and/or Council President:

  • Gains an understanding of CNJSCL’s structure, mission, vision, values and goals.
  • Accepts designated, CNJSCL focused projects.
  • Engages with CNJSCL staff, leaders, and members.
  • Learns and becomes proficient with internal software systems, as appropriate.
  • Assists in preparing information and research materials.
  • Assists in archiving grievance/arbitration and unfair practice charge files.
  • Takes notes and memos during meetings; types documents, drafts, and reports; sorts and
  • manages files as needed.
  • Shadows Staff Representative positions and trains in a variety of tasks as assigned.
  • May assist with coordinating other internship programs at locals.

Term: Flexible between 8 and 10 weeks from approximately June 1 – August 15.

Time Commitment: 20 hours per week. Some weeks up to 25 hours per week. Monday through Thursday.

Hourly Pay: $22/hour
