Organizing Director

Based in Los Angeles, CA

 

Background Information:
AFT 1521 is a progressive union representing 4,000 full-time and adjunct faculty on all nine campuses of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD).

The Organizing Director will oversee the internal organizing of the Local, supervise the organizing staff and Student Intern Coordinators, and will work with member leaders, and Student Interns to grow organizational capacity. The Organizing Department will build member power to win campaigns that advance the union’s priorities, and cultivate a culture that prioritizes organizing within the union.

Duties of the Organizing Director include:

  • develop and implement public-facing and internal campaigns, with members and community, to advance union priorities and increase organizational capacity.
  • implement aggressive membership growth efforts that also build leaders through campaigns and effective faculty-to-faculty conversations.
  • coordinate with Chapter Presidents, Committee Chairs, and other key leaders.
  • plan campaigns with SMART goals and measure progress with data.
  • organize member support for electoral and community campaigns.
  • coach and develop Lead Organizer and key member leaders to ensure success.
  • work with the Political Director and other key Guild leaders to deepen strategic relationships with key union and community partners.
  • identify targets for strategic partnership and collaborative opportunities.
  • work with the Lead Organizer to mobilize faculty around community issues.
  • align campaigns with Guild-wide messaging and communications strategy.
  • work with Guild staff and leaders to advance data practices and build a complete and accurate membership list that allows timely and advanced reporting.
  • work with OPEIU membership coordinator to build data practices into organizing work to increase accuracy of membership statistics relevant to Guild campaigns including contact info, work location, FT/PT status, and membership and COPE status.
  • work with OPEIU staff and communications team to develop and implement effective digital and traditional communication strategies for guild campaigns.
  • provide leadership and support the development and growth of campus “Contract Action Team” (CATs) to coordinate District Wide activities.
  • Work with the Chapter Presidents on increasing membership.
  • Develop and implement member recruitment and retention activities.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 1-3 years as an Organizing Director or Lead Organizer.
  • Experience supervising organizing staff and mentoring member leaders.
  • Prior experience with public higher education is desirable.
  • Contract campaigns or other union internal organizing experience is a strong plus. Experience building committees/teams in an organizing context is a plus.
  • Ability to establish rapport with and organize union members from widely diversified ethnic, social and economic groups.
  • Good judgment and ability to discern priorities when faced with multiple tasks.
  • Willingness to work independently, with occasional long and irregular hours.
  • Ability to communicate well in writing and orally.
  • Ability to maintain work files and manage membership assessments.
  • Proficiency with computers and applications including, but not limited to: Microsoft Office, Google Suite, E-mail and Internet.
  • Ability to drive to LACCD campuses and worksites throughout Los Angeles County. Driver’s License and vehicle required.
  • Familiarity with contract language, bargaining procedure, or knowledge of labor rights is a plus.

Pay Rate and Benefits:
$90,00 annual salary, employer-paid health, dental, vision insurance for employee and dependents, employer-paid life insurance; 20 paid holidays, 3-week’s paid vacation. Work phone and laptop provided.
