Lead Campaigner
Strategic Campaigns Department

Based in Washington, DC
(frequent travel)

 

Largest industrial union in North America seeks dedicated and creative individuals with experience leading contract campaigns in a variety of sectors.

The USW Strategic Campaigns Department is responsible for developing and coordinating membership mobilization and contract campaigns in a variety of industries to support collective bargaining. The campaigns vary – from individual local union contract campaigns to heavily-resourced corporate campaigns, labor disputes and first contract fights.

This position involves:

  • Working with staff, local union leaders and rank-and-file members from various industries to develop and lead campaigns that build solidarity and leverage to win fair contracts
  • Developing and implementing creative campaign strategies and tactics responsive to a variety of situations from tough bargaining at a single plant to high-profile, nationwide campaigns with multiple locals at a single employer
  • Conducting in-person, full-day and multi-day trainings with union members in various settings
  • Planning and implementing creative campaign actions
  • Writing campaign materials, including corporate communications, flyers, campaign updates and research reports
  • Leverage research on employers to inform strategies and tactics
  • Preparing local unions for potential labor disputes, leveraging strike preparation efforts and direct, on-the-ground support to win strikes and lockouts
  • Coordinating with other USW staff and departments, including bargainers, servicing reps, communications and organizing departments
  • Planning events and meetings with union members and staff
  • Mentoring other department staff and interns
  • Leading campaign teams in planning and problem-solving

Qualifications:

  • At least 7 years of experience in the labor movement or similar including experience leading various campaigns from planning through implementation
  • Ability to lead campaign teams, including setting goals, delegating, coaching and reporting out on campaign progress and activities
  • Experience developing and leading trainings and educational programs
  • Ability to write effective campaign materials quickly
  • Ability to conduct, analyze and report on corporate leverage research
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with union leadership, staff and rank-and-file members
  • Willingness to learn, take direction and work both collaboratively and independently
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, able to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, think ahead and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours when needed, including weekends and evenings
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and similar tools, such as Google Drive
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Frequent travel required across the U.S. and occasionally Canada
  • Proficiency in another language, particularly Spanish or French, a plus

Salary - Salary range is $72,500-$111,000, with placement on the range commensurate with experience. This is a bargaining unit position. Generous benefits provided by the employer including healthcare, dental, vision and retirement benefits.
