Under the direction and leadership of the Field Director a Union Representative helps to enforce the terms of collective bargaining agreements and protect the rights of union members.

UFCW Local 888 Overview:
UFCW Local 888 is one of the most diverse local unions under the UFCW International union, boasting a membership of over 6,500 workers in New York & New Jersey metropolitan area. We are one of the largest UFCW non-food unions representing hard working families in many different industries; Retail, Healthcare facilities, Plumbing & Heating Supply Houses, Machine Shops, Distribution Centers and Industrial Manufacturing Shops. Local 888 is growing steadily and in need of a new Organizer to join our elite Organizing team. This position is based out of New Jersey and New York.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintain regular and effective communication with workers in assigned territory through personal visits, flyers, newsletters, phone calls, mailings, bulletin board postings, and meetings.
  • Respond to telephone messages and emails in a timely manner.
  • Interpret collective bargaining agreements and other policies, and practices and assist union members in understanding their rights.
  • Prepare members for contract negotiations, elect negotiating committee, compile proposals to be given to employer for negotiations.
  • Ability to handle grievances, appeals, requests for hearings, and other formal personnel matters on behalf of union members.
  • Assist union members in achieving informal resolutions of work-related problems.
  • Maintain a calendar & records which accurately documents past, present, and future activities, visits, and appointments in connection with work as a field representative.
  • Identify, recruit, train and develop union leaders within each shop;
  • Maintain work files and comply with administrative reporting;
  • Work irregular hours, including nights and/or weekends on occasion.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree required;
  • Strong strategic and critical thinking skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Some knowledge of labor rights preferred.
  • Work effectively in team settings, as well as independently.
  • Effectively prioritize and multi-task assignments and responsibilities.
  • Up to 50% travel is required for the position.
  • Candidate MUST BE Bilingual, particularly in Spanish;
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with clean driving record;
  • Ability and willingness to understand our organization and take directions from Leadership.

Annual Salary- $58,000. Full benefits program which includes Medical, Optical, Dental, Prescription and Life Insurance. You will also be eligible for our company’s Defined Pension Plan and 401 (K) Plan and more.
