Organizing Director

Based in New Jersey

 

The Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE) is the largest union of Registered Nurses and health care professionals in New Jersey and an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). With more than 14,000 members in our 20 locals, we are a union of nurses, social workers, therapists, technicians, medical researchers, and other healthcare professionals. We work in hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies, blood banks, and university research facilities throughout New Jersey and the Philadelphia area. We are a leading voice bargaining and advocating for safer standards in healthcare to improve patient care and protect our healthcare workforce.

Reports to Executive Director.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee strategic organizing campaigns to expand union membership and increase density in the healthcare industry within the union’s jurisdiction.
  • Conduct analysis and assessment of the state’s healthcare industry to identify organizing opportunities and challenges.  
  • Create a plan for outreach to non-union healthcare workers and design a program for developing organizing leads.  
  • Provide day-to-day direction and supervision of organizing staff on organizing campaigns.
  • With approval from the Executive Director, recruit and hire organizing staff. Direct and oversee staff’s professional development, individualized assignments and workplans, and relevant personnel issues. Provide coaching, counseling, and discipline as needed.
  • Enforce all HPAE policies, programs, and directives pertaining to organizing staff.
  • Support the design, facilitation, and completion of all training pertinent to organizing staff and union leadership development.
  • Work to ensure application and utilization of the union’s organizing model.
  • In consultation with the Executive Director, work with the national union healthcare organizing director and staff as needed and participate in relevant national union organizing programs and meetings.
  • Oversee the management of organizing data and collection. Recommend organizing databases and development needs to the Executive Director. Leverage digital tools and platforms for efficient data management, analysis, and reporting.
  • Continue to direct organizing throughout first contract campaigns in collaboration with the membership representation director. Collaborate with membership representation directors and staff for internal organizing, contract campaigns, accretion, and bargaining to organize efforts as needed.
  • Collaborate with Public Policy Director and staff on all political and legislative, strategic research, community outreach, public relations and communications needs to support organizing campaigns.
  • Consult with HPAE General Counsel on legal strategies and to assure compliance with all applicable laws.
  • Stay informed about labor laws, regulations, and industry trends to inform and adapt organizing strategies.
  • In consultation with the Executive Director, develop campaign budgets and resource requests. Provide input into the State Federation annual budget process, maintain budget for department, monitor and approve employee expenses reimbursements in accordance with union policy.
  • Serve on a leadership team with other Department Directors to run the programs of the organization and implement the State Federation’s strategic plans under the direction of the Executive Director and the leadership of the HPAE State Officers.

Qualifications and Requirements:
Successful candidates will have:

  • A record of leading successful organizing campaigns.
  • Prior experience in a supervisory capacity or lead capacity.
  • Minimum of 10 years of overall experience working for labor unions.
  • Understanding of the laws and regulations governing union representation elections.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal).
  • Able to work well in teams and diverse groups.
  • BA/BS in related field or equivalent experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and self-insured vehicle.
  • Preference to those with direct organizing experience in the healthcare industry.

Compensation Package: Salary commensurate with experience.
