Internal Organizer

Purpose:
We are Service Employees International Union, Local 99—Education Workers United.

We are teachers’ assistants, playground workers, special education assistants, bus drivers, gardeners, custodians, cafeteria workers, maintenance workers, early care and education workers, and others working in schools, colleges, family childcare centers, and administrative offices. We are nearly 50,000 public and private sector education workers throughout Los Angeles, Ventura, and San Bernardino Counties.

Position Summary:
The Internal Organizer will be responsible to train, coach and develop members and member-leaders to build power at their worksites and union-wide.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Effectively recruit, mentor, coach and develop new leaders
  • Train member-leaders to recruit and mobilize union members to participate in the union
  • Raise COPE funds by educating members about the connection of politics to improving their wages and working
  • Create and foster a member-leader communication infrastructure at worksites and within jurisdiction to support organizing and union priorities
  • Effectively recruit and mobilize new members to participate in the union
  • Recruit volunteers to participate in electoral and lobbying activities
  • Develop and execute plans for internal organizing and contract and worksite campaigns for issues such as member rights, local and state budgets, contract negotiations, health, and safety, etc.
  • Enforce contracts at the worksite or in disciplinary appeals through organizing and advocacy
  • Updates member case information in appropriate databases
  • Conduct worksite meetings, informal discipline, grievance meetings and labor management meetings
  • Prepare and manage work plans, calendars, files, reports, and other records
  • Support and assist, in collective bargaining or serve as union chief negotiator
  • Walks door-to-door, telephones, or lobbies voters and/or elected officials about candidates and issues consistent with Local 99's electoral and legislative program
  • Moves the agenda and programs of SEIU, including participating in rallies and other activities supported or hosted by the Local
  • Submits Local 99 administrative reports such as Activity Reports, auto insurance, Outlook calendar scheduling, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION
Works under the supervision of the Internal Organizing Manager and are in the Internal Organizing Department.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:

  • Organizing methodology
  • English grammar and punctuation rules – proficient
  • Microsoft Office Word, Outlook, and Excel (Access a plus)
  • Office equipment (fax machines, computers, copiers, etc.)
  • Online meeting platforms (Zoom, etc.)

Ability to:

  • Organize members to build an infrastructure at their worksite to build power
  • Communicate with members, member-leaders, staff, and management with a professional and courteous attitude
  • Exercise good judgment and establish priorities when faced with many tasks and while working with minimal supervision
  • Recognize, handle and/or refer politically sensitive situations
  • Listen, speak and write exceptionally well
  • Model and encourage positive interpersonal relations among colleagues
  • Motivate co-workers while working both independently and on a team
  • Be well-organized and self-motivated
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Work in a high-pressure environment and organize time wisely to meet unpredictable deadlines
  • Negotiate collective bargaining agreements
  • Represent individual members in disciplinary appeals
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with senior management staff, including school district superintendents, elected officials, and others

ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college-or university or its equivalent a plus but not required
  • 3 years’ experience as an Organizer in the labor movement or with a community group

REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong commitment to progressive social change and activism and understands and commits to SEIU Local 99's members and mission
  • Work long, varied hours including evenings and some weekends
  • Maintain a valid Driver's License, current auto insurance, and reliable automobile
  • Drive for extended periods of time and walk to and from schools, worksites and other locations which may involve climbing stairs
  • Bilingualism is strongly desired but not a requirement
  • Contract implementation experience is strongly desired but not a requirement
  • Must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid California driver’s license; must have auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$100,000 property coverage); and must possess an automobile for personal/business use

Salary range: $66,560.00 – $74,913.87 per CBA negotiated rates.
