AFSCME Local Unions in Northern California are joined together in AFSCME District Council 57 to provide professional field representation, coordinated contract campaigns, political action and organizing. The Local Unions affiliated with AFSCME District Council 57 represents more than 35,000 public sector workers in 27 Local Unions. Members in affiliated Local Unions work for county governments, cities, school districts, special governmental districts, hospitals and transportation agencies.

Position: Administrative Service Assistant – (2) Part-Time

Location: Yuba City, Burbank, CA   
Hours: Parttime 25 hours per week
 $31.27 - $36.64 ASAI/II

Our ideal candidate will be proactive in providing administrative support to various Council staff and local leadership. The position requires the ability to be able to organize work, interact effectively and positively with others and have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Must have exceptional self-direction and possess the ability to handle an environment that is fast paced and periodically deadline driven. You must be able to multitask with a strong knowledge of Office365, Excel, Access, and Database Management to ensure data quality and accuracy. Must be familiar with various social media software.


  • Provide varied secretarial and office administrative assistance to local union officers, members, supervisory and field staff in various locations.
  • Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines and following up on assignments.
  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Inputting, maintaining and constructing accurate membership data and reports.
  • Composing correspondence independently or from brief instructions as well as proofing for accuracy.
  • Organizing and maintaining accurate files, records, spreadsheets and databases.
  • Taking accurate and concise telephone messages.
  • Develops and maintains spreadsheets, and other related reports, by allocating, posting and verifying entries.
  • Operating standard office equipment, such as personal computers, laptops, various software, projectors, multi-line telephone equipment, copiers, folding machines and postage meters.
  • Managing incoming and outgoing communication as assigned.
  • Monthly and or occasional travel to satellite offices will be required to complete assignments and possibly other office secretarial assignments.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Excellent verbal, written and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated proficient knowledge of Office 365 (emphasis on Excel and Access). Internet Explorer proficient.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Highly motivated self-starter.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments.
  • Ability to use the internet for information collection and research.

Education and or Experience:

  • Graduation from High School with a minimum of three years progressively responsible office experience.

Other Requirements:

  • The position requires the possession of and continuance of a valid California driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment testing at an acceptable level of 80% or higher. (MSOffice Suite, Access, Proofreading-Error Detection and etc.)
