Lead Campaigner

Largest industrial Union in North America seeks experienced and creative individuals from varying backgrounds interested in leading strategic campaigns.

The USW Strategic Campaigns Department is responsible for developing and coordinating membership mobilization programs to support collective bargaining and strategic initiatives across a variety of industries. The campaigns vary – from small-scale, local union driven contract campaigns to heavily resourced corporate campaigns run at multiple locations across the country.

This position involves:

  • Working with staff, local union leaders and rank-and-file members from various industries to develop and lead mobilization campaigns that build solidarity to win fair labor contracts
  • Developing creative campaign strategies and tactics responsive to a variety of situations from tough bargaining at a single plant to high-profile, nationwide campaigns with multiple locals at a single employer
  • Conducting in-person, full-day and multi-day trainings with union members in various settings
  • Planning and implementing creative campaign actions
  • Writing campaign materials, including corporate communications, flyers, campaign updates and research reports
  • Leverage research on employers to inform strategies and tactics
  • Running campaigns in tough bargaining situations that leverage worker power by preparing local unions for potential labor disputes (strikes and lockouts), and when necessary, providing direct, on-the-ground support during disputes on the picket lines and beyond
  • Coordinating with other USW staff and departments, including bargainers, servicing reps, communications and organizing departments
  • Planning events and meetings with union members and staff
  • Mentoring and sharing skills with department staff and interns


  • At least 5 years of experience in the labor movement or similar including experience leading campaigns from planning through implementation
  • Experience leading and developing trainings and educational programs
  • Ability to write effective campaign materials quickly
  • Ability to conduct, analyze and report on corporate leverage research
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with union leadership, staff and rank-and-file members
  • Willingness to learn, take direction and work collaboratively in teams
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, able to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, think ahead and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours when needed, including weekends and evenings
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and similar tools, such as Google Drive
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Frequent travel required across the U.S. and occasionally Canada
  • Proficiency in another language, particularly Spanish or French, a plus

Salary - Salary range is $72,000-$111,000, with placement on the range commensurate with experience. This is a bargaining unit position. Generous benefits provided by the employer including healthcare, dental, vision and retirement benefits.
