Director of Collective Bargaining

The NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003, a dynamic member-led union, seeks an experienced, New York City-based Director of Collective Bargaining with bargaining, organizing and managerial skills, ready to support members and union staff working in a rapidly changing media industry. The New York Guild is a labor union representing nearly 6,000 journalists and media workers in the greater NYC area. Our parent union, The NewsGuild-Communications Workers of America, represents over 24,000 news media workers in the US and Canada. Our members work in all areas of the media industry, including print, digital and broadcast operations.

The Director of Collective Bargaining will oversee contract negotiations and lead collective bargaining strategy for the Local and is responsible for directing and supervising Local bargaining staff. This role reports directly to the President of the Local, and coordinates closely with the Organizing Director, as well as with Local and International union leadership. Applicants should be ready to hit the ground running to oversee bargaining and contract campaigns within a militant and growing union.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  • Organizes and directs support for collective bargaining and contract campaigns, including reviewing table/unit strategies, proposals, tentative agreements, contract enforcement, member actions and strike readiness. Assists with coordinated and joint bargaining.
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of a comprehensive Local-wide bargaining program, tracking bargaining status with staff/local leaders, contract expirations and renewals. Leads and develops high priority strategic initiatives and programs within the Local in coordination with Local leadership and the Organizing Director.
  • Manage Local bargaining staff, clearly communicate expectations, campaign objectives, strategic plans and goals; manage performance and develop support plans for performance.
  • Assist with development of member and staff training, workshops and events to enable members to build more power in their workplaces.
  • Monitor industry-wide trends, assessing and recommending strategic research to support campaigns, and moving grant applications through approval and implementation process in service of Local priorities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in relevant fields preferred.
  • At least eight to ten years of relevant work experience in the labor movement, with demonstrated contract bargaining, organizing, strike and staff management experience.
  • A deep and demonstrated  commitment to building a diverse, democratic and member-led union and labor movement, with a successful track record of organizing and managing complex contract campaigns.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, management, and strategic planning skills.
  • Ability to manage relationships in complex and sensitive political and organizational situations. Proven ability to lead by example and foster mentoring relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail in developing campaign plans.
  • Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing professional work plans and goals.
  • Ability to work long and extended hours as needed.

COMPENSATION:
Starting salary range of $150,000 – $160,000 commensurate with experience, and an excellent benefits package including fully-paid medical, defined benefit pension and 401(k), generous holidays, and flexible work arrangements.
