General Position Description:
The Metropolitan Baltimore AFL-CIO Community Services of Central Maryland, Inc. is responsible for all aspects of the relationships between the United Way of Central Maryland (UWCM) and various labor organizations. Supports a variety of volunteerism initiatives, including community engagement projects/initiatives, and fundraising events including the annual Union Night at Camden Yards and golf tournament. Coordinates with the President of the Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO and its executive board to support labor campaigns and assist, as needed, with union-related aspects of other campaigns. This position is funded via fundraising initiatives and grant funding. The Community Services Director reports directly to the President of the Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO Unions.
Essential Functions:
- Implement the AFL-CIO Community Services program
- Provide assistance to workers and their families
- Provide service to the general community
- Build community volunteer capacity within the labor council and union members/supporters
- Improve public and private support systems for workers and their families in need
- Provide “upstream” support to working families throughout the community to reduce their need for services and assistance
- Prepare for Community Services Board meetings: review budgets, prepare annual budget and annual report, identify issues important for Board consideration such as legislation, new programs, personnel matters, and welfare to work reform.
- Assist in selection of Van Gelder Labor Award honoree.
- Provide assistance to local unions as requested: strike assistance, plant closings, shop steward trainings
- Increase labor’s financial support for the annual United Way Campaign and provide community engagement opportunities to the labor council and union members.
- Cultivate the AFL-CIO and United Way of Central Maryland partnership.
- Fulfill administrative responsibilities associated with the responsibilities herein.
- Develop, in consultation with the labor council, an annual work plan.
- Write and secure grant funding to conduct new and existing programmatic work of Community Services of Central Maryland.
- Attend appropriate AFL-CIO and United Way of Central Maryland meetings and conferences, with the approval of the labor council president and United Way of Central Maryland.
- Make reports to the labor council as requested and appropriate.
- Manages obligations associated with the Raising the Bar Pre-Apprenticeship Readiness program in conjunction with the labor council and Baltimore-DC Building Trades Council.
- Supports various community volunteerism initiates, including but not limited to: community engagement projects for donor organizations and prospective organizations.
- Coordinates with the President of the Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO and its executive board to support labor campaigns and assist, as needed, with union-related aspects of other campaigns.
- Serves as coordinator for the annual holiday baskets program and golf tournament.
- Conduct fundraisers to secure resources for Community Services
- Provides general office support for the Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO (e.g. answering phones, administrative support duties) as needed and directed.
- Supports and assists as needed in all Council and COPE activities.
Required Qualifications/Skills:
- Minimum: High school diploma or GED
- Grant writing experienced required.
- Experience and/or affiliation with labor unions preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, team building, problem solving and decision-making skills
- Attention to detail and high level of accuracy to meet deadlines
- Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills
- Computer skills (with knowledge of MS Office), internet research, social media and email communication skills required; database management skills preferred
- Must be able to coordinate multiple volunteer programs simultaneously and effectively
- Ability to work independently in a professional manner
- Ability to work effectively with people possessing various levels of skills
- Ability to work long, irregular hours and weekends
- Must have a reliable vehicle
