Position and Area Description:
Virginia Education Association (VEA) announces the opening of the position of Racial & Social Justice Grant Coordinator for 2023-2026. The Great Public Schools (GPS) Grant is a partnership between VEA and the National Education Association (NEA) Teacher Quality Department. The position works under the direct supervision of the Director of Human and Civil Rights (HCR), which is responsible for designing and implementing programs to address and protect human and civil rights. The Racial & Social Justice Grant Coordinator is responsible for planning and delivering programming to promote cultural competence development and greater cross-cultural understanding for members. The person in this role will be responsible for assisting with planning, implementing, documenting, and reporting grant-funded activities. Activities will focus on providing high-quality programming, professional learning, and assessment on cultural competence; establishing a mentor program for early career members of color; and collaboration to help establish a Members of Color affinity group. This position is responsible for all aspects of grant management. This is a three-year, NEA grant funded position.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree and relevant experience.
- Knowledge and appreciation of contemporary racial and social justice issues in public k-12 schools.
- Understand social justice unionism, and the intersections of the labor movement with the struggles for racial and social justice through history, particularly in the field of public education.
- Must also have strong attention to detail, written and interpersonal communications skills, ability to compile data and complete reports, appreciates problem-solving and testing new ideas, commitment to racial and social justice and inclusivity, responsive to constructive feedback.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Perform independent and semi-independent work on assigned projects, programs, and events.
- Valid driver’s license required due to occasional travel
Core Job Functions:
- Coordinate with various departments to complete and submit all documentation of the grant required to VEA and NEA;
- Ensure periodic reports are prepared and submitted to remain in compliance with grant requirements;
- Maintain accurate files;
- Communicate with members and staff regarding grant activities, as appropriate;
- Communicate with fiscal contacts at NEA for information gathering and problem resolution;
- Assess needs and assist in resolving issues related to grant accounting;
- Advocate for equitable policies and practices to promote racial and social justice and diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Work with Coordinator of VEA’s Learning Management System and collaborate with members to develop training, train member trainers, and facilitate training
- Work with Aspiring Educators Coordinator to implement professional learning on cultural competence for aspiring educators.
- Collaborate with members to develop resources on cultural competence
Salary and Benefits:
This is a professional staff position covered by the VEA/VPSA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Salary is negotiable depending upon applicant’s experience and qualifications. Effective September 1, 2022, the VEA/Staff CBA has a salary range of $71,740 to $107,555 for 2022-2023. The contract also includes an excellent fringe benefits package.
