Deputy Director of Public Affairs for Events and Outreach

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association, AFL-CIO ("NATCA"), the labor union representing federal-sector and private-sector air traffic controllers and other aviation safety professionals, has an immediate opening for a Deputy Director of Public Affairs for Events and Outreach in its Washington, D.C. headquarters office.
The Deputy Director of Public Affairs for Events and Outreach is responsible for:
- organizing NATCA’s biennial national convention and other national conferences and events;
- assisting the Director of Public Affairs with the oversight and management of department staff working on events and outreach;
- serving as the primary liaison with event planning committees led by NATCA members;
- identifying venues that support event objectives and conducting site inspections;
- establishing positive working relationships with event venue personnel and serving as the primary NATCA contact at event sites;
- developing and managing all event specifications, including requirements for the meeting program, meeting room set-up, food and beverage, audiovisual/technical needs, exhibit and conference hall and stage design and construction, and other services;
- researching, selecting, negotiating contracts with, and managing the work of third-party vendors related to event activities;
- developing event budgets, tracking spending for compliance with approved budgets, and reconciling expenses;
- representing NATCA at aviation-related conferences and events;
- and maintaining historical information, such as room block and attendance data, to assist with future planning.
Qualified applicants should have:
- a bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, event and conference management, or related field (Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) certification is also desirable);
- have 8-10 years of meeting planning experience, with at least 3-4 years in a leadership role, specifically with demonstrated responsibilities for planning conventions, trade shows, conferences, or similar events ranging in size from 500 to 2500 attendees;
- have the ability to multi-task and manage multiple events simultaneously;
- and have excellent organizational skills with great attention to detail. Position will require extensive travel, including during weekends.
