Under the direction and leadership of the Director of Organizing, an Organizer-In-Training helps to drive organizing efforts of the Local Union.

UFCW Local 888 Overview:
UFCW Local 888 is one of the most diverse local unions under the UFCW International union, boasting a membership of over 6,500 workers in New York & New Jersey metropolitan area. We are one of the largest UFCW non-food unions representing hard working families in many different industries; Retail, Healthcare facilities, Plumbing & Heating Supply Houses, Machine Shops, Distribution Centers and Industrial Manufacturing Shops. Local 888 is growing steadily and in need of a new Organizer to join our elite Organizing team. This position is based out of New Jersey and New York.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Identify, recruit, train and develop union leaders;
  • Assist the Organizing Director in developing and executing plans for campaigns, including but not limited to, budget issues, contract negotiations, worker safety, etc.
  • Contact workers through various in-house communication systems;
  • Work to build coalitions with community groups and organizations;
  • Maintain work files and comply with administrative reporting;
  • Mobilize, turnout and engage workers to take action;
  • Recruit community allies in organizing campaigns;
  • Solicit union membership through weekly orientations, house-visits, individual meeting;
  • Work irregular hours, including nights and/or weekends on occasion.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree required;
  • Strong strategic and critical thinking skills;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Some knowledge of labor rights preferred;
  • Work effectively in team settings, as well as independently;
  • Effectively prioritize and multi-task assignments and responsibilities;
  • Up to 50% travel is required for the position;
  • Candidate must be Bilingual, particularly in Spanish;
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and automobile with auto insurance;
  • Ability and willingness to understand our organization and take directions from Leadership.
