Introduction
The Texas Climate Jobs Project seeks a dynamic and passionate External Organizer who will lead efforts to develop organizing strategies to raise working conditions and lift the voices of working people and impacted communities in clean energy sectors across the state as part of our Clean Energy Workers Rising campaign.
Overview of the Organization
The mission of the Texas Climate Jobs Project is to advance a pro-climate, pro-worker agenda in Texas. Through innovative research and policy development; popular education; community engagement; advocacy; and strategic coalition building and partnerships, Texas Climate Jobs Project is engaging in collective action to protect the climate and create good local jobs.
Texas Climate Jobs Project is part of Fair Shot Texas and the Fair Shot Texas Action Fund, affiliated nonprofit organizations that were founded by the Texas AFL-CIO and labor unions across the state to advance a working families policy agenda in Texas.
The Job
The External Organizer responsibilities will include:
- Organizing and Outreach: Help develop and execute a comprehensive organizing vision to raise standards in strategic clean energy industries across the state. Develop relationships and maintain regular contact with a diverse range of leaders from across the state, including union leaders, rank and file union members, climate activists, community groups, and others.
- Comprehensive Campaigning: Work with researchers, campaigners, organizers, communications coordinators, and other staff to support the execution of comprehensive campaigns to support our work.
- Training and Development: Lead, train, develop, and supervise organizers and community leaders to expand the capacity of our campaigns and community organizing efforts.
- Administration and Operations: Work with staff to support effective administrative and operations functions.
- Other duties and responsibilities as needed
Primary Characteristics and Experience
The Texas Climate Jobs Project External Organizer is a leadership position with supervisory responsibilities. The position should be an experienced, passionate advocate for a progressive economic agenda, a deep believer in the power of unions to lead on economic and climate issues, and committed to meet the existential threat of both global climate change and economic inequality with bold, transformative solutions.
The position will be based in either our Austin or Houston office, with frequent travel to other areas of Texas. The position will depend on building deep relationships with labor unions, as well as an ability to effectively analyze and evaluate climate and clean energy proposals across the state.
In addition, the External Organizer should have:
- A minimum of two years of organizing experience in labor, workers’ rights, or similar setting;
- Deep understanding of relational organizing, especially among diverse groups of people;
- In-depth knowledge and experience working within the labor movement, preferably in Texas;
- A deep commitment to building power alongside impacted workers and marginalized communities;
- An ability to work independently and juggle multiple priorities;
- Critical thinking and ability to think strategically about building and exercising power;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Ability to travel frequently to different areas of the state;
- A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep interest in local policy, politics, and government;
- Flexibility and potential to excel in a fast-paced, quickly-evolving campaign movement that has a diverse and invested group of stakeholders.
Salary: Minimum $60,000, with potential adjustments upward depending on experience. Excellent benefits including healthcare, retirement, and paid leave. This is a grant funded position expected to end September 30, 2024; with the possibility of continuation contingent on additional grant funding for this position at that time. This position is a bargaining unit position with Teamsters Local 988.
