Executive Director
Charleston Workers’ Center
Based in Charleston, SC
The Charleston Workers’ Center seeks a founding Executive Director. Once established the Workers’ Center will aid Charleston-area workers who are organizing collectively to improve their wages, working conditions, and lives.
The Executive Director’s responsibilities will include: budgeting; grant-writing; staff management; board development; strategic planning; and media and outreach. All of these are essential to building the Workers’ Center’s capacity and stability. The ED will also work with staff and the governing board to carry out a range of programs and initiatives that develop workplace leaders, build solidarity for union organizing drives, and advocate policy reforms at the state and local levels. The work builds upon the Charleston Alliance for Fair Employment’s track record of success and draws upon CAFÉ’s partnerships with the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1422, the Charleston Central Labor Council, the Union of Southern Service Workers, and the Poor People’s Campaign.
The ideal candidate is an energetic and flexible leader who can help shape the Workers’ Center alongside local workers and board members. They should be prepared to work long hours, though flexible scheduling will allow for evening and weekend meeting attendance. The candidate should also be based in the Charleston area and have at least five years of organizing experience, preferably in the labor movement and other initiatives aimed at building Black and working-class power.
Compensation: The salary range begins at $55,000 and ranges up commensurate with experience. The ED will additionally be provided a monthly stipend for their health insurance and cell phone use. This job requires local and regional travel, which will be compensated at the federal mileage rate.
