National Representative
Federal / Municipal Division

The National Association of Government Employees, SEIU, seeks to fill a National Representative vacancy within the Federal/Municipal Division in Alexandria, Virginia. National Representatives within the Federal/Municipal Division, report to the Federal Director and are responsible for providing the full range of representation to members in their assigned regions. This includes assisting, developing, training, and mentoring local union leaders in union administration, grievance processing through the arbitration level, contract negotiations, appearances before governmental entities (including councils, boards and commissions), political action, internal communications program, and internal organizing.

Responsibilities:

  • Advising, assisting, training and/or participating in all aspects of the negotiation and grievance processes including, but not limited to, arbitration hearings.
  • Representing individuals and the Union in various matters, including grievance, discrimination complaints, employee disciplinary hearings, unfair labor practice charges, and other administrative hearings.
  • Organizing local workplace by signing up new members, assisting the workers in coming together for direct action, and informing workers of the benefits of membership in the Union.
  • Acting as technical advisor and coordinator to various Union bodies, stewards and officials.
  • Providing advice, training, coordination and assistance to workers and job stewards on matters of wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
  • Ability to independently handle difficult and complex issues in labor relations matters.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to exercise skills in interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to establish rapport with and organize members in widely diversified ethnic, social and economic groups.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and handle multiple priorities.
  • Successfully work independently, meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Other related duties as required.

Experience and Educational Requirements:

  • College degree preferred, but not required.
  • Significant and specialized experience may be substituted for educational requirements.
  • Three years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of and understanding of unions and the labor movement union organizing practices and basic labor law.
  • Leadership and motivational skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Effective oral and written communications.
  • Interest in the labor movement.

Other:

  • Work is performed in a variety of worksite locations. Regular travel required. Some overnight travel required, usually less than 1/3 of work time.
  • Extended hours may be required.
  • Must be able to transport and lift a variety of boxes, bags and materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
