The Writers Guild of America, East, AFL-CIO (WGAE) is a labor union representing thousands of members who write content for motion pictures, television, news and online media. The Guild negotiates and administers contracts that protect the creative and economic rights of its members; conducts programs, seminars and events on issues of interest to writers; and presents writers’ views to various bodies of government.
Primary functions and responsibilities:
- Serve as lead organizer in first contract negotiations for online media digital shops and podcast studios. Engage, mobilize, train members in contract negotiation campaigns, escalation plans, and public campaigns.
- Lead or second chair negotiations for renewal contracts, including working with bargaining committees in proposal writing, counter proposals, and escalation campaigns.
- Work with shop stewards and shop committees to enforce their collective bargaining agreements. podcast and digital media shops already covered by the WGAE. Current represented shops include Huffpo, Slate, Vice Media, Fast Company, Inc.,Vox Media, The Intercept, Crooked Media and many others
- Work with members to organize around workplace and industry issues including, but not limited to: diversity and equity, industry-wide events and/or campaigns, and workplace actions.
- Identify and develop member leaders.
- Ensure consistent communication with representative committees and the full bargaining units through regular emails, phone banking, and in-person 1:1s and events.
- Maintain updated lists (including, but not limited to, full bargaining unit lists, union representative committee lists, Action Network mass email lists, and industry-wide leader/ally lists).
- Additional duties will include applying an organizing model to enforcement of collective bargaining agreements for members already represented by the WGAE.
Qualifications
- At least five years of successful union organizing, bargaining, or servicing experience.
- Experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements.
- Ability to move workers to get involved with the union, commitment to workplace democracy and transparency.
- Ability to plan and coordinate work activities.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and members.
- Ability to conduct research and gather information for negotiations, strategy development and other servicing and organizing activities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours and weekends.
- Ability to develop and execute a work plan.
Reports to: Director and Deputy Director of Online Media and Podcasts
Salary and Benefits
There is a competitive and comprehensive benefits package. Salary is applicable union scale – a range of $89,085.00 -- $100,252.55. Excellent benefits per a CBA including but not limited to employer paid health insurance, defined benefit pension plan.
