Associate Director

Associate Director (20 hours/week)

The UConn Health Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (UCHC-AAUP) is pleased to announce a part-time Associate Director position to be filled as soon as possible.

The Associate Director will play a vital role in identifying and implementing efficiencies within the administrative functions of the union, as well as providing skilled representation, organizing, legislative and negotiations support on a part-time basis to 650 faculty members at UConn Health. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping and implementing the union’s objectives, with support and oversight of the Executive Director and Executive Council. This position will include a combination of remote work and in-person work. Positions within the union require a commitment to racial and gender equity and involve working with diverse individuals both inside and outside of the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Office/Financial Management

  • Manage union bookkeeping, including entering bills, issuing payments, reconciling accounts, preparing bimonthly payroll, preparing monthly budget reports, assisting with the annual audit, and assisting with the annual budget preparation;
  • Manage the union’s database, including monthly data reconciliation;
  • Negotiate with vendors to meet the current needs of the union for office space, insurance, events, and supplies;

Union Representation and Internal Organizing

  • Assist with providing skilled representation to faculty members who request union guidance on workplace issues, including representation during investigations and grievance meetings;
  • Assist with contract negotiations, including research and preparation of surveys, proposals and campaign plans;
  • Assist with internal and external union communications;
  • Assist with leadership identification and recruitment of faculty to key councils and committees, such as the Executive Council, Collective Bargaining Council, Negotiating Committee, Government Relations Committee, and Communications and Membership Committee;
  • Assist with the union’s program to welcome new faculty to the union;
  • Assist with the union’s legislative program.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience working for labor unions required. Experience with health care and/or higher ed. unions preferred;
  • Demonstrated experience working with union leaders and members to build strong organizing, communications, political and representational structures;
  • Demonstrated experience working with coalitions to support the union’s allies and advance the union’s goals;
  • Superior interpersonal skills, including written and oral communication skills and computer proficiency (ie, working familiarity with MS Office suite and Zoom);
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully implement efficiencies within the administrative functions of a union;
  • Ability to work independently within the context of a strategic plan;
  • Familiarity with Intuit Quickbooks (QB) preferred; for the candidate who meets all other qualifications, the union will provide QB training;

Compensation
Salary range: Starting salary of $45,000 for required qualifications; higher salary for additional relevant qualifications and experience. Generous benefits package, including health insurance and 401(K).

Position Classification
This is an exempt position and not eligible for overtime pay.
