Apprentice Organizer / Organizer

POSITION TITLE: Apprentice Organizer/Organizer
WEEKLY WAGE RANGE: $1,271.39 – $1,539.71**
**After five (5) years of service this wage range shall automatically bump up to the starting range for the senior Organizer position.

This position has a “levels” centered transition process; meaning that there are two (2) wage levels to obtain, based upon performance and service within the organization; these do come with product reviews from the Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Union; and there is a one (1) year probationary period. The initial apprenticeship period is for a minimum of five (5) years with the potential of evolving into a full-time permanent organizing staff position. The terms of how the Apprentice Organizer transitions to a senior Organizer position will be based on the criteria for what determines the completion training and the on-going organizing efforts that have or may evolve due to related duties and responsibilities.

TRAINING AND SUPPORT:
The Apprentice Organizer/Organizer will be provided on the job training under the supervision of the local Union Executive Secretary-Treasurer and the International Union’s Apprentice Organizer Program that includes monthly Zoom trainings; provisions under the AFL-CIO Organizing Institute, OPEIU and local labor education programs.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is an Apprentice Organizer/Organizer position and has the primary focus to initiate and conduct new organizing campaigns; initiate and conduct internal organizing campaigns along with the Union Representative; increase Union visibility and assist with direct action campaigns in key workplaces as directed by local Union staff and with guidance and direction of the Executive Secretary-Treasurer.

The Apprentice Organizer/Organizer is in charge of communicating the aims and purposes of this Union to members and shall be devoted and dedicated to promoting, protecting and championing the legitimate struggles and well-being of the office and Local 11 members.

The Apprentice Organizer/Organizer works under the direction of the Executive Secretary-
Treasurer of the Office & Professional Employees International Union, Local 11 and provides a professional echelon of support to our members, Union Representatives and the Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Union. This position works independently, within a team process, as well as closely with membership, Stewards and Employers.

The Apprentice Organizer/Organizer is a salaried employee with a calendar that may be driven by representative needs, but may take them into the field either early morning or afterhours. That said, they are to try and maintain regular office hours, but have some flexibility to accommodate the needs of the members and office staff that they support.

The Apprentice Organizer/Organizer is required to have a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance and a reliable vehicle. Driving long distances for extended periods of time is also required. Travel both statewide and out of State with overnights and periods away from home may be required

The Apprentice Organizer/Organizer position shall maintain general functions of the Union Office for its staff and membership though the use of interpersonal skills and technology consistent with the evolving demands of the position and bargaining unit work performed shall be, including but not limited to as follows:

RESPONSIBILITES INCLUDE:

  • Target and develop organizing campaigns, both internal campaigns and new organizing
  • Conduct and coordinate home visits, phone calls, site visits and other on- on-one outreach to build membership, support and further the goals of a campaign.
  • Write and produce basic campaign leaflets and other materials; with the Executive Secretary-Treasurer approval.
  • Manage lists, assessments, charts and other campaign tools.
  • Submit a detailed report each week demonstrating activities.
  • Partner with the Union Representative new member orientations as needed.
  • Assist with member turnout for events and actions.
  • Regularly required to drive a car, operate a computer, a cell phone, and other general office equipment; while performing the duties of this job.
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; sit and lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Required to travel for days, weeks, and sometimes months at a time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement and social justice.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer skills and proficiency with basic WORD.
  • Vehicle, insurance and valid driver’s license required.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends and irregular hours with some travel.
  • Ability to provide detailed campaign summaries and assessments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain credibility with diverse demographic groups, as well as, with professional, technical, administrative and service workers.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • A basic understanding of how the collective bargaining process works.
  • Strong verbal, listening, written and computer skills.
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to cultivate a good working relationship with members and Employer’s.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
