What You’ll Do ─ Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Development Director leads the development and execution of an annual fund development plan that aligns with JMA’s strategic priorities. They make this happen by working closely with the Co-Executive Directors on setting goals and identifying appropriate strategies to ensure revenue is diverse and sustainable.
The Development Director will also work with leadership staff and members of the Board of Directors to identify, cultivate, and maintain strong relationships with new and existing national and regional funders. They will also lead a growing team of dedicated development staff.
Specifically, you will:
- Develop and execute an annual fundraising development plan that aligns with JMA’s strategic priorities & budget; as part of this process, the Development Director sets goals and identifies appropriate strategies to ensure revenue is diverse and sustainable.
- Identify, cultivate, and maintain strong relationships with new and existing national and regional funders, leading through all stages of the grant lifecycle.
- Effectively work with the organization as a whole to foster an organizational culture of fundraising among staff and board.
- Collaborate with Co-Executive Directors, Deputy Director, and Finance Director, to create the development of the annual organizational budget and management process.
- Design, implement, and maintain adequate systems and processes to strengthen JMA’s fundraising infrastructure and effectively carry out fund development work. This will include overseeing the organization’s CRM system (Salesforce) and other fundraising software and supervising staff to manage these.
- Be a Proactive Member of the Management Team:
- Engage in strategic decision-making, short/long-term strategic planning and development and implementation of organizational strategies, policies, and practices.
- Identify and address organizational development issues that support health and effectiveness in general and fund development specifically.
- Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and procedures – both timely attention to individual administrative responsibilities as well as oversight to ensure the understanding and compliance of team members
About you - Qualifications and Work Experience Requirements:
- Work Experience: At least 8 years working in non-profit fundraising or related fields
- At least 2 years of supervisory experience
- Experience in leading in the development and management of a non-profit fund development plan.
- Collaboration: Exchanging information, ideas, and thoughts with others in a manner that is proactive and enhances partnerships. Experience contributing to strategic planning, cross-team collaboration and the development of organization wide policies and systems
- Budgeting: Ability to forecast and track revenue and expenses for all foundations.
- Research: Ability to identify and research prospective major donors using all available resources, including foundation center data basis. Experienced in staying on top of a non-profit organization’s programmatic developments and philanthropy trends and developments.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to tailor messages to clearly and persuasively communicate JMA’s work to the public and inspire people to support our work
- Relationship Building: Ability to build and sustain authentic and productive working relationships with colleagues across race and other group identities, including JMA employees as well as external partners. Skilled at managing and inspiring a team by motivating and ensuring that staff are supported with annual performance evaluations and professional development planning
- Flexibility: Be ready to take advantage of unexpected opportunities and adapt quickly as things change
- Demonstrated self-awareness, empathy, and social skills in work and interpersonal interactions
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, solve problems and overcome obstacles to get the work done
- Ability to multitask, work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining a positive attitude
- Deep understanding of political landscape and dynamics within philanthropy and major social justice donor coalition spaces
- Facilitation skills and an ability to unite the team on overall goals, strategic direction and campaign/work plans
- Extremely organized and highly detail oriented
- Proficiency with GoogleSuite and Adobe Acrobat preferred. Proficiency with Salesforce a plus.
Other Physical Requirements:
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
- Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on the telephone with reasonable accommodations
- Attend community meetings and events and engage in foundation visits nationally.
What Else You Should Know ─ Compensation/Benefits:
- Salary Range $95,000 – $120,000 depending on experience and location
- 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for the employee, partner and dependents
- Generous paid time off including 12 personal days, 12 federal holidays, and 2 floating holidays each year. A two week winter break at the end of each December. Staff can accrue up to 20 vacation days and 20 sick days. After 5 years of work, all staff are eligible for 3 months of paid sabbatical leave.
