Digital Communications Coordinator

Position Overview
Transportation Alternatives (TA), New York City's advocate for walking, bicycling, and public transportation, seeks a creative, curious, and passionate Digital Communications Coordinator to broaden the awareness and impact of TA across our digital platforms.

Situated within the Communications team, the role will report to the Communications Manager and work across all of TA’s Communications, Research, Design, Development, and Advocacy & Organizing teams. Our ideal candidate loves New York City, is committed to TA’s mission for transportation justice and safe, vibrant, and healthy streets, is a strong writer for a variety of audiences/platforms, and is comfortable in the fast-paced world of issue advocacy.


  • Own the production of TA’s weekly email newsletter which has a reach of over 100K individuals. This includes writing content, seeking internal approvals, managing edits, and sending emails out via TA’s EveryAction communications platform.
  • Work with Advocacy & Organizing and Development teams on formatting, proofing, segmenting, and sending emails for advocacy campaigns, fundraising appeals, and events.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the email production process and to creatively build and strengthen TA’s subscriber list. This includes shaping an email funnel for volunteers, donors, and casual email lists, driving subscribers to increase their involvement with TA.

Social Media

  • Collaborate with the Research and Design teams to distill information from TA research, reports, and press releases and draft social media content for Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
  • Monitor trends across platforms and identify effective opportunities for TA to be part of the conversation online.
  • Unify TA brand and messaging across digital platforms.
  • Attend on-the-ground events and document for social media.

Collaborate with Advocacy & Organizing and Development teams to imagine, create, and execute event- and program-specific digital marketing initiatives that increase overall awareness of TA’s brand and work on behalf of all New Yorkers.


  • Oversee regular site updates as well as the addition of new content. This includes media mentions and press releases, campaign and petition links, advocacy and fundraising events, and reports, among other content.
  • Create and update microsites for fundraising campaigns, advocacy campaigns, and organizational events, as needed.
  • Position TA as a resource in the community beyond our own events. Identify opportunities to partner on content creation and events with allied organizations.
  • Manage TA’s Adobe Lightroom and ensure photo assets are regularly uploaded and cataloged.

Qualified candidates will bring with them

  • 2+ years of experience in email production, social media management, digital marketing, or related field
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Ability to distill information and develop creative digital assets for email and social media
  • Love for all-things social media, constantly monitoring and engaging with trends, memes, and more
  • Strong organization, task management, and prioritization skills
  • Comfort and demonstrated experience researching and onboarding new tools and systems
  • Comfort working in a highly collaborative environment
  • Familiarity and interest in TA’s work and mission

Exceptional candidates will also bring with them

  • Familiarity with photo editing, design, and/or video editing, including for platforms built for social media like Canva
  • Experience with paid social media
  • Experience with CRMs such as EveryAction
  • Experience with CMS such as Squarespace or WordPress

This position is included in the bargaining unit of TA employees represented by the Technical, Office and Professional Union, T.O.P. Local 2110 UAW.
