Internal Organizer / Rep / Admin

The Massachusetts Society of Professors (MSP) is seeking a full-time staff member to join our energetic union local representing nearly 1800 faculty and librarians at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (MSP/MTA/NEA). We are looking for someone who can advance the goals of our members by serving as an Internal Organizer, Union Representative and Office Staff. We are dedicated to winning excellent benefits for our members, protecting and enhancing faculty and librarians’ professional rights at work, and taking the lead on a range of issues that affect the lives of faculty and librarians and the quality of education offered at the University. The MSP is affiliated with the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) and National Educators Association (NEA), and our members are committed to advancing public education and workers’ rights across the state.
Position Location: Amherst, Massachusetts (in-person only)
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist members in resolving workplace concerns through contract enforcement and collective action
- Creatively organize to support the union’s work at the bargaining table and in grievances
- Develop and implement organizing plans to strengthen internal membership
- Increase engagement and mobilization of membership in union initiatives
- Recruit and expand leadership and activist network
- Train and support leaders and member activists in effective organizing tactics
- Build and conduct new member orientation and outreach programs
- Work together with leaders and members to carry out local and statewide campaigns
- Develop literature for orientations, newsletters, and union communications
- Maintain social media and union website
- Assure functioning of local office by providing general office support, such as: database management, phone and email communications, coordination and processing of membership
- Carry out various tasks as assigned by union leadership, including: supporting internal committees, preparing for meetings, serving as liaison to university or labor committees
Qualifications:
- Union knowledge and organizing experience
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suites, Google Suites, social media and Zoom, graphics ability preferred
- Well organized and detail-oriented
- Self-starter with strong work ethic
- Experience in an academic setting highly desirable
Compensation and Benefits:
Pay, commensurate with experience, starting at $60,000 per year. Excellent comprehensive health and dental plan and employer contributions to a SEP-IRA. Paid time off includes: vacation time, sick time, personal days, and a generous paid holiday schedule.
