The union has approximately 425 staff in sixteen offices from Boston to Miami. 32BJ SEIU represents over 175,000 property service workers including janitors, security officers, airport workers, and food service employees in 11 states and Washington, D.C. 32BJ is an affiliate of SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, which has 2 million members dedicated to raising industry standards and making life better for all working families and communities.

32BJ SEIU’s headquarters are in New York City.

The Political Organizer is based in Newark with frequent travel throughout the state and to the State’s Capital, Trenton. The Political Organizer is primarily responsible for aspects of the Union’s campaign to empower and educate members on the union’s political program. Additionally, the Political Organizer, executes pieces of the union’s legislative and political program under direction and supervision of the New Jersey Political Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Coordinating the New Jersey member political engagement program, Social Justice Leadership Academy, which focuses on training members on social justice issues that impact the membership.
  • Builds and maintains positive and respectful relationships with Union officers, elected officials, community and labor leaders, and other potential coalition partners
  • Working with the Political Director in New Jersey to implement a statewide public policy and political agenda throughout the region.
  • Monitoring and coordinating aspects of legislative and policy reform initiatives that effect the Union, worker’s rights and social justice.
  • Supports Field Reps in their political outreach to members, as needed, to develop member interest in the union's political program. Helps make the case for action & involvement, including participation in the union’s PAC.
  • Planning events to engage members in the political work of the union.
  • Planning and coordinating campaign activities, grassroots lobbying, phone banking and events for our campaigns as needed.
  • Supporting campaign strategies, including rallies, press events and targeted member activity.
  • Tracking and managing regular member voter registration and PAC sign-up campaigns.
  • Providing briefings and education materials for staff and members around legislative and electoral work.
  • Coordinating regional activity with staff working on national campaigns.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2-3 years of experience in worker or community organizing; legislative; or electoral campaigns.
  • Experience working with directly impacted people.
  • Ability to train and teach people of varying skillsets around economic and social justice issues.
  • Ability to plan and execute large-scale events with the support of the Political Director.
  • Ability to design and implement powerful and effective campaign plans with the support of the Political Director.
  • Excellent communications skills and experience building strong working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Fluent written and oral Spanish preferred but not required.
  • The ability and willingness to travel and to work long hours, including evenings and weekends as campaigns require.
  • This position requires travel to various locations throughout New Jersey, a Valid driver’s license and car with insurance is required.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
The salary for this role is $61,770.00. 32BJ offers a generous benefits package that includes a car stipend, full employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan (for full-time employees and their qualified dependents) and retirement benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. 32BJ offers paid time off including three weeks’ vacation, eleven holidays, twelve sick days and, after the first year of service, four personal days. The union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
