Summary of Position:
In a newly created position, the Senior Digital Strategy Officer will coordinate the development and execution of a cohesive digital strategy to advance the Solidarity Center’s campaigns, programs and economic and social justice priorities. This position will be supervised by the Communications Director, under the leadership of the Executive Communications Director, who will create the vision for and manage the growing Communications Department. This individual also will coordinate closely with the Campaign Communications Director and field and program directors.
Working closely with Solidarity Center’s communications team, campaigns team, field offices and thematic departments, the Senior Digital Communications Strategy Officer is responsible for developing and implementing effective digital communications strategies and generating content that support workers’ efforts to win economic justice, strengthen democracy and advance broad social justice objectives. The Senior Digital Communications Strategy Officer will expand the Solidarity Center’s online presence and community, deepening engagement with worker rights supporters and activists, and new audiences. The position will be based in Washington, DC, and will include regular international travel to connect with global partners and Solidarity Center staff and Country Program Directors (CPDs).
Critical to success in this role will be deep knowledge of the social media landscape—including trends and best practices—along with digital advocacy, organic and paid social media, and audience and influencer engagement. Relevant campaign communications experience, strong writing and storytelling skills, keen political judgment, and the ability to work with campaign teams and country offices to support the organization’s strategic priorities are also key. International experience and familiarity with global worker rights and/or union-building campaigns will be valuable assets.
Qualifications
The Senior Digital Communications Strategy Officer must be able to work independently and without supervision and is thoroughly conversant with current events and ongoing political, economic, social and trade union developments relevant to Solidarity Center’s work. This individual has a broad understanding of the Solidarity Center’s programs at country, regional and global levels. Previous professional experience in communications, new media and/or media relations, and/or experience in the Solidarity Center as a Program Officer III are required. This individual must have the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously, respond effectively to unexpected challenges and make substantive decisions that have major effects on costs and completion of projects. Fluency in a foreign language is a plus.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing strategic digital communications plans to advance economic or social justice campaigns.
- Experience in international worker rights and union-building campaigns preferred.
- Strong background managing and developing messaging, content and social media kits for all online platforms.
- Experience using strategic digital advocacy to promote grassroots actions, build online community, support fundraising and policy objectives, and move decision makers.
- Thorough understanding of social media management tools for scheduling posts and responding to comments.
- Experience managing communities on platforms including Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
- Solid graphic design and photo- and video-editing skills to create visually engaging digital content.
- Practical knowledge of SEO and web traffic metrics.
- Familiarity with HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Content Management System theme development, CRMs, graphic design and video editing software, and other digital tools and applications.
- Knowledge of website development, architecture and navigation protocols.
- Ability to continually develop skills related to rapidly changing technology and communications best practices.
- Previous experience with unions, community, global human rights, electoral and/or political organizations and other labor-related organizations.
- A degree in communications, journalism, labor relations, political science or international affairs, or a minimum of 10 years equivalent work experience.
- Understanding of labor movement dynamics globally and in the United States.
- Excellent listening, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments using good judgment and discretion.
- Ability to understand and effectively articulate Solidarity Center’s mission and programs to diverse audiences.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, specifically the ability to relate to and communicate effectively with Solidarity Center staff, worker leaders, U.S. and foreign trade union leaders, and representatives of non-governmental organizations.
- Exceptional writing/editing, critical thinking and analytical skills.
This position entails occasional and at times frequent travel outside the United States.
Specific duties:
- Develop and implement a strategic digital communications plan to grow audiences for Solidarity Center’s digital assets and support Solidarity Center priority campaigns and activities;
- Create integrated content and messaging for Solidarity Center online platforms, and proactively respond to social interactions;
- Oversee the digital advertising budget and vendors to support strategic audience growth and campaign goals;
- Develop an editorial calendar in coordination with priority campaigns to plan strategic content and update digital assets, including the website and social media accounts;
- Work directly with campaign/program leads and communications staff to create and share strategic digital content and drive online engagement of workers, coalition partners, key stakeholders and new audiences;
- Regularly analyze the effectiveness of digital content and strategies to develop metrics for success and best practices;
- Monitor online channels for information useful to Solidarity Center campaigns and priority issues;
- Coordinate with the Senior Media Relations Officer to integrate online strategies and initiatives related to media influence; and
- Perform other tasks as assigned.

This is a collective bargaining unit position, generously compensated with a gross annual salary starting at approximately $99,673 USD based on experience. A robust benefits package includes fully paid health insurance, a retirement plan and pension, life insurance, and ample paid time off for holidays, vacation, and medical leave.
