Executive Director for Doctors Council SEIU is a position that will enable you to advocate and work with a dedicated group of members, as well as experienced and motivated staff.
Doctors Council SEIU is the nation’s oldest and largest union for physicians and dentists. Doctors Council is affiliated with SEIU. We represent doctors who work in public and private facilities across different states.
Our mission is to empower and enable our members to have a strong and united voice at work, in the community and legislatively, advocating for doctors and our patients.

POSITION AVAILABLE:
Executive Director:
You will be responsible for running and overseeing all aspects of the union while reporting directly to the President.
The Executive Director is the principal person of the organization and helps create, lead and ensure the successful implementation of the strategic direction and vision while developing members and staff.
Responsibilities:
The qualified individual will be responsible for ensuring the day-to-day functions of the union are run efficiently. Work with and develop members and staff. You will develop and implement strategic plans.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Work with leadership to develop and implement strategic plans.
- Empower and enable our organizing so that we can grow by adding more and new members to our union, increasing our density.
- Communication with and development of our existing members, internal organizing and leadership development; working with committees.
- Oversee all aspects of bargaining, including serving as Chief Spokesperson, creation of bargaining committees and proposals, and running contract campaigns.
- Grievance and arbitration coordination with staff, ensuring contract enforcement.
- Labor-Management Partnerships/ Committees, such as Collaboration Councils, ensuring our members have an effective voice at work.
- Oversee community and political action and engagement.
- Effective and productive administration of our benefits we provide to our members, working with our benefits office.
- Financial stewardship.
- Coordination with legal, accounting and all consultants.
- Recruit, interview and hiring staff; oversee and develop all staff.
- Run meetings.
- Work with SEIU and other unions, as well as community, medical and political allies.
- Represent Doctors Council SEIU in all aspects, and at conferences, functions, meetings, etc.
Qualifications:
Applicants for this position must possess a bachelor's/college degree or higher degree and have at least ten (10) years’ experience working in unions with increasing responsibilities, with the needed experience and skills.
You must also have:
- Experience running and leading a union, preferably in healthcare, or with professional employees.
- Knowledge of healthcare changes and reforms, issues facing doctors and patients as well as hospitals and health systems.
- Demonstrated success at providing direction and leadership.
- Proven ability to analyze complex situations with multiple diverse stakeholders and create a plan and support.
- The ability to work simultaneously on multiple issues with deadlines.
- Experience in supervising staff and member mobilizations, and ability to relate, establish and cultivate meaningful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
- A knowledge of and experience in union organizing.
- The ability to write organizing plans.
- Budgetary and fiscal experience.
- Sensitivity to political nuances within a labor organization.
- Extensive experience working with coalitions.
- A track record of discerning priorities and meeting competing deadlines.
- Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- Advanced knowledge of and ability to use technology as a tool to advance our goals, and also with programs, databases, email, internet, social media and organizing methodology.
- A strong working knowledge of database programs.
- Must be able to drive and maintain a valid driver's license, auto insurance and reliable car, as well as possess personal credit cards. Be able to drive long distances, and travel throughout the country to different states and cities. Travel and work away from home.
You need to have a belief in and commitment to the idea that doctors must have a voice in and be an integral part of the delivery of quality, timely and safe patient care and that by striving to work together with our communities, patients, elected leaders and employers we can best achieve this.
Lead staff and members by example, setting high standards in work ethic and professional approach to work. Articulate a positive vision of our work and who we are and represent.
Know how to have fun, have a sense of humor, and help yourself and others find joy in work.
You must be a self-starter. This position requires long and varied hours, including nights and weekends, with travel. This position is based out of our national office in New York and reports to the President.
Salary and benefits: Salary Range: $144,000.00 to $175,000.00 per annum. Total compensation may vary based on factors such as work experience, market conditions, education, training, and skill level.
