Digital Organizer
Based in Joliet and Chicago, IL
Warehouse Workers for Justice (WWJ) is a worker center fighting for good, living wage jobs among the thousands of logistics workers in the Chicagoland and Will County area, the largest intermodal logistics hub in the United States. The Digital Organizer will play a key role in shaping the overarching digital engagement strategy for WWJ, in close consultation with other members of the communications and organizing departments. They will be responsible for a variety of aspects of organizing, will support the development of workplace organizing campaigns, recruit and sustain members of WWJ, and support work of organizing committees. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to and ability to convey our organizational mission, values, and objectives; They would be able to demonstrate a track record of designing impactful digital campaigns and growing worker leads lists. As well as an ability to achieve results in a fast-paced and dynamic campaigning environment, while balancing short and long-term organizational priorities. This is a full-time, salaried position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Develop strategies for reaching warehouse workers online through mediums such as Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, WhatsApp, comment sections, etc.
- On an ongoing basis, monitor a variety of online spaces and identify potential workplace organizing leads.
- Develop short-term and long-term plans to recruit new WWJ members digitally and turn out to in-person member meetings and events.
- Conduct regular, digital and in-person outreach to warehouse workers in Chicago, suburban Cook County, and Will County to grow WWJ membership & in support of ongoing or potential workplace organizing campaigns.
- Create and digitally distribute monthly member newsletter
- Create and maintain a list of local warehouses with open investigations by federal, state, and local regulators and provide regular updates to the organizing team.
- Attend regular staff meetings with supervisors and other organizers to discuss campaign progress, goals, and campaign activities.
- Input data and worker information into WWJ databases on a regular basis.
- Occasionally attend community events in Chicago, Cook County and Will County to represent WWJ.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- At least 1 to 2 years experience in community and/or labor organizing.
- Bilingual Spanish/English a plus, to include excellent written/verbal communication skills and ability to interpret/translate;
- Experience with Facebook Live, Zoom, Twitter, and other online forums where workers congregate; as well as experience of running Facebook ad campaigns and/or other paid digital programs
- Reliable transportation (in possession of insured vehicle and valid driver's license);
- Ability to work with a diverse population;
- Motivated, professional, and detail-oriented;
- Be able to work independently while being able to incorporate constructive feedback from supervisors;
- Be able to work on a team;
- Experience in identifying and developing new leaders and activists;
- Accepts performance-based criticism and directions;
- Works well under pressure and handles stress;
- Outreach duties require work during regular office hours and some nights and weekends. Additionally, employee must be able to drive or travel within Will County up to 50% time;
- Employee must be able to work in a moderately noisy and crowded work environment without an expectation of privacy;
The annual salary for this position is $48,000 – $52,000; compensation also includes fully paid health insurance and phone reimbursement.
