Communications Specialist
Based in Kansas City or St. Louis, MO

The Missouri Workers Center is a statewide organization of low-wage workers dedicated to fighting racism and winning good jobs for all Missourians. The organization grew out of nearly a decade of low-wage worker organizing in Kansas City, MO under the banner of Stand Up KC. Since our public launch in November 2021, the organization has expanded to include low-wage logistics workers organizing for better pay and safer working conditions, has launched ambitious campaigns across Missouri, and brought low-wage workers into campaigns to win criminal and housing justice reforms.

Purpose of Position: To execute Missouri Workers Center’s communications strategy by implementing digital and traditional communications tactics. The specialist will curate digital communications, draft press materials, develop relationships with journalists, train low-wage workers to effectively share their stories, and expand MWC’s digital footprint. This position will work closely with MWC field teams and report directly to the Executive Director.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Traditional Communications:
- Work closely with the field team to develop and execute communications plans.
- Craft messaging and talking points that frame the campaign overall and specific moments or issues, and shape public narratives around these issues.
- Connect various campaigns to one another through spokesperson training, message training, earned media, and social media strategies.
- Identify reporters, editors, podcast hosts, etc who cover relevant beats and build relationships to cultivate their interest in low-wage worker organizing.
- Write press releases and statements. Pitch stories that support the campaign and raise the profile of worker organizing in this sector.
- Serve as a media point person: coordinate interview requests, draft talking points, prep workers and community members to speak with reporters.
Digital Communications:
- Designing & creating storytelling-focused content from a worker’s voice, to engage both workers and allies, including but not limited to: email writing, web content, graphic design, social media organic and paid content, SMS and peer-to-peer texting
- Self-report at actions and events across MWC’s digital platforms
- Coding emails and website updates with basic HTML and minimal CSS
- Report out on digital results, providing metrics and analyzing what they mean for next steps & future campaigns
- Maintain a digital content calendar tracking upcoming dates, actions, and compression moments to drive digital strategy
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- A commitment to building a multi-racial workers movement.
- The ability to be on time and work long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Moderate graphic design skills and an eye for engaging content.
- Detail oriented and able to carry out plans with direction in a timely and effective manner.
- A demonstrated ability to use storytelling and persuasive writing to explain complex legislative and corporate details
- Ability to write quickly and sharply for a variety of audiences and in different formats, from press releases to research reports to op-eds.
- The ability and desire to work in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines and managing multiple projects
- Proven relational skills to build rapport with workers, organizers, reporters, and allies.
- Willingness to travel on occasion.
LOCATION, COMPENSATION, BENEFITS
This is a full-time position and reports to the Executive Director. This position will be hybrid remote based out of either our Kansas City or St. Louis office.
We offer a competitive starting salary between $50,000 to $55,000 (based on experience) and benefits, including:
