Accounting Assistant

Based in New York City, NY

 

Local 161 is a Union of Motion Picture Script Supervisors, Production Coordinators, Assistant Production Coordinators, Travel Coordinators, Production Accountants, Assistant Production Accountants and Payroll Accountants of over 1700 members in 23 states and the District of Columbia.

Applications are being accepted for the position of Accounting Assistant.  This is a full time in-office position working out of Local 161’s New York City office.  
 
Summary Statement:
This position works closely with the lead Accountant and the Treasurer to process, input, reconcile and analyze a variety of financial and accounting transactions.  Attendance at staff and various leadership meetings is required, as necessary. This position works under the supervision of the Accountant and reports to the  Business Agent of Local 161.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Use accounting software, spreadsheets, and word processing software to perform a variety of accounting related tasks.
  • Prepare and work with complex worksheets that are developed from source documents and accounting data systems for analysis and reporting.
  • Creates schedules, reports and analysis for review by supervisory staff
  • Record and deposit physical check payments
  • Scan and digitally file financial documents
  • Create and fulfill bulk mailings
  • Communicate with vendors, staff, and members by telephone, email, and Slack
  • Maintain records, logs and files of transactions and activities
  • Perform reconciliations of bank accounts when assigned
  • Prepare monthly reports as needed by the Treasurer
  • Perform special projects and other duties as directed by the Business Agent, Treasurer, or Accountant.  
  • Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice

Experience:
Preference will be given to candidates with a college degree in Accounting  or a minimum of 3  years experience in accounting  related work. Some knowledge of IATSE, collective bargaining and the labor movement, is a plus.  A professional attitude is a must.
 
Qualifications - The most qualified candidate needs the following:

  • College degree in accounting or 3 years of experience in related field
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks while working with minimal supervision; manage time effectively to meet deadlines and be self-motivated to learn and take on new tasks and responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of organizational skills, accuracy, attention to detail and workflow output.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, leadership and others external to the Local.
  • Proficiency with a personal computer, 10-key calculator and in the use of Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Slack, Adobe Acrobat, Docusign or equivalent, and digital filing systems.  
  • Experience using accounting software (eg Quickbooks)
  • Experience with processing payroll
  • Ability to work from the Local office Monday through Friday during normal business hours.  Occasional overtime may be required.    
  • Previous union experience highly recommended

Salary:
The current salary range is $65,000 - $75,000  based on qualifications and experience and includes a competitive and comprehensive benefits package (MPIPHP)
