Statewide Trainer
Based in Raleigh-Durham area, NC
Overview of responsibilities:
The Statewide Trainer is employed by and supervised by the NC State AFL-CIO and will work with local union affiliates, central labor councils, and the NC State AFL-CIO in the adaptation and delivery of comprehensive campaign training for electoral and legislative campaigns. The trainer is responsible for working with state fed and national AFL-CIO staff, central labor councils, and affiliates to schedule and oversee local training programs and to prepare and assist local union leaders and activists in increasing member engagement and mobilization leading up to the 2024 election. This position will be in a national cohort of local trainers. The trainer must live in the Raleigh-Durham area. Position is grant-funded and time-limited through December 31, 2024.
Description of duties:
- Work with National AFL-CIO and local union staff to adapt and deliver training programs to central labor councils and affiliated unions on various aspects of tactics, managing volunteers, coordination of worksite programs, and communication skills. Provide local insight and knowledge of specific political and programmatic needs at the local level.
- Responsible for planning, scheduling, and implementing local training programs under the direction of the state federation. Oversee logistics and all preparations for the training. This includes working with the local union staff to secure a training location, AV needs, printing, and training preparation for facilitators and trainers.
- Participate in a national training cohort and provide feedback, best practices, and peer support.
- Act as a project coordinator for all sizes and scope of campaign training in your state including tracking progress for program completion.
- Be a campaign trainer at affiliate conferences, trainings, and meetings.
- Work with affiliate unions to identify needs, best practices, and opportunities to provide assistance.
- Help deliver train-the-trainer program to maximize capacity for training delivery, including providing support to newly developed trainers.
- Responsible for providing regular updates on progress of the training programs, including detailed analytics and weekly and potentially daily numeric reports.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience in union or community organizing.
- Minimum 1-2 years of legislative or electoral campaign experience, including work in the field.
- Bachelor’s degree in Labor Studies, Political Science, or Sociology helpful but not required.
- Experience as a trainer and facilitator.
- Able to adapt and deliver training programs related to campaign development and implementation, and organizational and leadership development.
- Capable of working independently as well as part of a team.
- Able to make professional and persuasive presentations and to meaningfully engage a wide range of diverse audiences including different labor groups and community allies.
- Effective time management skills; able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
- Experience with adult education methods; can effectively connect with, inspire, and coach adult learners.
- Able to accept feedback and to provide feedback effectively and with sensitivity.
- Able to adapt and adjust to various audiences and to make changes to training agendas/curriculum to meet the needs of training participants.
- Works well with a diverse range of co-workers, leaders, and organizations.
- Works effectively in politically sensitive environments.
- Must have own transportation and the ability to travel frequently to a variety of local and state-wide locations.
- Can work long and extended hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Is creative and innovative in developing training programs.
- Must be a team player as well as able to take own initiative.
