External Organizer
Based in Southern California
(Los Angeles Preferred)
UPTE, CWA Local 9119 (“UPTE”) is a dynamic and growing member-run, statewide union representing 17,000 University of California technical, research, and health care professionals. UPTE is seeking to hire a an External Organizer for an assignment based in Southern California.
Key responsibilities:
- Trains members to plan, lead and conduct organizing, political, community, and issue-oriented campaigns.
- Develops member leaders to run strong campaigns, building towards supermajority support.
- Practices the highest level of organizing skills, empowering non-represented workers to organize their coworkers to win the Union. Regular one-on-one contact with members is required.
- Develops and maintains effective Organizing Committees to plan, implement, and move successful unionization drives.
- Helps to develop and deliver formal and informal education programs to train workplace leaders.
- Train and develop top leaders and loss-time organizers, leading a team of member-organizers to move multiple simultaneous campaigns.
- Drive stakeholder and coalition organizing with students, Union allies, community groups, and others. Help plan escalating actions and comprehensive campaign elements.
- Demonstrates proficiency in all elements of organizing through leadership development and mentoring, instead of assuming primary responsibility for success.
Skills and knowledge required:
- 1-3 years prior labor or non-profit organizing experience, particularly in the area of member development.
- Demonstrated success in member-based field organizing and mobilization.
- Ability to conduct one-on-one visits, site visits, in person meetings, phone calls, video meetings, and other interactions with members and potential members.
- Experience working with groups of activists on dedicated outcomes and benchmarks.
Qualifications:
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
- Strong strategic and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated passion for the labor movement, worker and immigrant justice.
- The ability to build strong relationships, develop trust, and push worker leaders.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Moderate computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, database and email applications.
- Valid California driver's license, travel, temporary assignments and extended work hours are occasionally required.

Compensation includes a competitive salary and benefits package.
The pay scale is $69,817.99 - $91,096.64 depending on experience.
