American Association of University Professors
Biomedical Health Sciences of New Jersey

Director of Representation / Staff Attorney

Based in New Brunswick, NJ

Here is a novel opportunity to represent physicians, dentists and other health science faculty.

The American Association of University Professors-Biomedical Health Sciences of New Jersey (AAUP-BHSNJ) seeks to fill the position of Director of Representation/Staff Attorney. The AAUP-BHSNJ is a union representing approximately 1,300 faculty members employed by Rutgers University at various medical and health-related professional schools, including the New Jersey Medical School, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, the New Jersey Dental School, the School of Health Professions, the School of Public Health, and the School of Nursing. It is currently merging negotiations units and operations with the Rutgers Council of Chapters-AAUP-AFT. The AAUP-BHSNJ also represents 200 faculty members employed by Rowan University at the school of Osteopathic Medicine.

We at AAUP-BHSNJ believe in a vision where our universities are models for faculty engagement and provide a high-quality work environment for everyone. Quite simply, if Rutgers and Rowan are to become among the best academic health centers, they must be national leaders in their treatment of faculty.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Representation/Staff Attorney is responsible for: (1) bargaining of collective negotiations agreements with Rowan University (drafting contract language and proposals, chairing the union’s bargaining teams, and communicating with the membership about bargaining); (2) administering the collective negotiations agreements (preparing and processing faculty grievances, including arbitrations/mediations); (3) assisting with the union’s engagement of members and leadership development and other duties as assigned.

A candidate should have experience representing employees and/or other professionals in arbitration/mediation and similar settings. Work representing professionals in the healthcare and/or academic sectors is a plus. JD degree/Active New Jersey license is required for use of the title Staff Attorney. Excellent communications and writing skills are required.
