Organization Overview:
SEIU Michigan joins together Michigan’s 4 SEIU locals—SEIU Healthcare Michigan, SEIU Local 517M, SEIU Local 1 and the Michigan Corrections Organization together to develop and lead the union’s strategy and program across locals, industries, and geographies to build power and win justice for workers, our families, and our communities.

SEIU Michigan members are from every walk of life, every political party, every background, every faith. They work across the healthcare spectrum providing high quality care and services. They are the workers who keep our nation’s airports running and make sure landmark buildings are clean and secure. They provide essential public services and give a foundation of learning to our youngest and brightest.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Build year round, cycle to cycle power by facilitating and unleashing the power of workers in Michigan.
  • Leads the engagement of members and not yet union workers in regular Respect Squad meetings and trainings focusing on increasing the number of members and organizing leaders engaged in action and developing the leadership of worker activists.
  • Manages intense membership and COPE campaigns with locals—training staff and member leaders on best practices and creating plans to meet ambitious goals.
  • Manages Actions—in Lansing (including Lobby Days) and throughout Michigan related to contract, organizing, and issues fights.
  • Lead a significant part of SEIU Michigan’s work in fully integrating politics, organizing, and member engagement to accelerate breakthroughs on our demand for Unions for All Michigan workers.
  • Integrates, aligns, and develops campaigns and campaign strategy (membership, electoral, contract, organizing, etc.);
  • Utilizes Race Class Narrative and other tools to build campaign plans.
  • Be a significant partner to locals, supervising campaigns of SEIU Michigan while driving overall strategy, campaign coordination, building member leadership, and strengthening relationships among locals.

Education and Experience:

  • Passion for and commitment to working people, organized labor, and racial justice
  • 3-5 years professional experience in organizing, popular education, and/or electoral work.
  • Significant relationships in and understanding of the Michigan progressive and labor community, statewide.
  • Experience managing and working with teams of peers and leaders.
  • Commitment to facilitating workers in building and unleashing their own power.
  • Possessing effective oral and written communications, including planning, developing and implementing strong training programs.
  • Developing strong working relationships and the ability to work on a team;
  • Managing and accessing multiple high-priority programs and priorities in different.
  • Managing a program budget and implementing strategic plans.
  • Managing and developing electoral and grassroots campaign plans, logistics.
  • Meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Working with leaders, staff, and partners and operating with a high level of judgment and discretion.

Working Conditions:

  • Staff are expected to work long and irregular hours, work on weekends and holidays when necessary.


  • Salary range--$75,000-85,000 and benefit package includes fully paid health insurance, defined-benefit pension, etc.
