Position Summary:
Local 1445 is seeking curious, open-minded Researchers to use well-researched information to develop and execute comprehensive campaigns and to provide research and analysis that advances the interests of the Union in targeted industries for the purpose of organizing and collective bargaining.

The Local 1445 Researcher is responsible for researching public and private companies and analyzing to develop and execute strategies for confronting corporate power and providing information under the guidance and direction of senior staff.

The Researcher will work closely with the senior leadership and other Local 1445 directors on long and short-term campaign goals, creating leverage for internal and external organizing and collective bargaining campaigns.

Must believe that the basic belief that economic inequality is a pernicious problem and the labor movement is the primary force for making change is deemed a necessary personal characteristic to serve as a foundation for success in the job.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts in-depth, ongoing research on public and private companies focused on gathering and analyzing large amounts of information using a wide array of sources with frequent reporting and direction by senior staff.
  • Conducts industry-level and other research and analysis to advance the priorities of the Local Union.
  • Deals in facts with rigorous accuracy at all times.
  • Meticulously produces, proofreads, publishes, and distributes highly accurate campaign material with close editing and direction by senior leadership.
  • Produces, edits, maintains, and communicates reference information, including as needed writing and speaking to UFCW International and Local Union officers, staff, and members.
  • Manages competing priorities and meets tight timelines.
  • Supports bargaining, including contract costing and financial analysis as needed.
  • Supports campaigns and the priorities of the Union, including political work as needed, in collaboration with other directors at local 1445.
  • Develops good working relationships with organizers, Local and regional staff, elected leaders, external allies and other stakeholders.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Some experience on rigorous relevant research and/or activist experience required.
  • Demonstrated passion and commitment to confronting and changing power the Job Demands
  • Travel required sometimes at the last minute. Some irregular or unpredictable hours are required. Work often is performed with multiple projects occurring simultaneously deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, writing and computer skills. Must be able to represent the union in various settings.
  • Ability to use and learn data and natural language processing tools and software to gather, clean, explore, and analyze customized datasets.
  • Must be able to discern facts, evaluate sources, and understand information systems to fulfill research tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and communicate complex analysis using a wide range of data sets. Attention to detail and constant curiosity is a must.
  • Must have initiative and follow instructions. Must be motivated to solve problems and not intimidated or frustrated by detailed and technical tasks.
  • Must be able to balance conflicting demands and changing priorities and anticipate future needs. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage competing priorities and deadlines under pressure and finish deadlines.
  • Maintains an open mind and does not jump to unsubstantiated conclusions.
