Community Organizer
Based in Dedham, MA
Bargaining Position Title: Community Organizer
Salary Position: $50,000
Probation period: 6 months
Minimum hours of work: 40
Position Summary:
The Community Organizer will work on developing and assessing opportunities and programs to build relationships with community leaders volunteers and allies wishing a specific community.
The community organizer will be responsible to create leverage and capacity for local 1445 organizing drives through a grass root approach to mobilize leaders who act collectively, and strategically to empower workers to protect their rights, to improve their quality of life.
Areas of Responsibility
- Planning and carrying out various actions, meetings, campaigns within a community.
- Developing and working with the community and political allies and empowering leaders in these capacities.
- Identifying, recruiting, developing, and mobilizing leaders in strategic, sustained, meaningful ways.
- Engaging in one-on-one persuasion, inoculation, assessment, and motivation of unorganized workers at the worksite, in meetings, on the phone, and on home visits as necessary.
- Developing and carrying out community campaign work plans.
- Developing work issue campaigns based on group issues and coordinating with local all local 1445’s directors.
- Organizing, coordinating, and supporting union political, contract, organizing, and issue campaigns.
- Understand and connect members issues within their community and advise the local on how and where to get involved in those communities to build capacity and local 1445’s presence.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bilingual skills are highly desired.
- Driver's license and vehicle required.
- Experience in the labor moment issues and structure.
- Knowledge of database softwares, Internet and basic computer skills.
- Ability to lead, motivate and inspire members to develop into leaders and participate in key union programs (i.e. politics, organizing, bargaining, etc.)
- Demonstrated understanding of organizing for power and commitment to social justice.
- Ability to take initiative and be creative in developing new roles for community involvement
- Sound interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to providing a quality member experience including the ability to establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Working knowledge of collective bargaining issues.
- Sound organizational skills to manage and prioritize work subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment, as an individual and as a member of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to formulate and deliver on short-term and long-term organizing plans, member development and capacity building goals.
