Content Writer

Based in Latham, NY

 

United University Professions (UUP), the nation’s largest higher education union, is seeking a Content Writer for its Communications Department. UUP represents more than 42,000 academic and professional members at the State University of New York’s four-year campuses, teaching hospitals and medical schools. The content writer will work at UUP’s central offices in Latham, NY. UUP Communications allows employees to work remotely for up to two days each week. This is an entry level position.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Writing bylined stories and other assignments for the union’s two membership magazines, The Voice and The Echo. This may include interviewing UUP members at SUNY campuses across the state for news stories, feature stories or profiles for The Voice and The Echo. Each magazine is published four times a year.
  • Contributing written items for UUP’s website and a weekly electronic newsletter emailed to the UUP membership.
  • Covering live events, including outdoor rallies, marches, union events on campuses, press conferences, meetings with lawmakers, and UUP’s Delegate Assembly, held twice each year. This will include taking photos and/or video and writing stories.
  • Assisting with proofreading and editing of newsletters, magazines, news releases and statements, reports by UUP officers, and a host of other editing/proofreading assignments.
  • Writing, editing and proofreading content for marketing emails, print pieces (flyers, palm cards, etc.) and other communications sent out by UUP’s Legislative and Benefits departments.
  • Contributing photos for UUP’s social media channels.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field is required.
  • Writing samples are required. Please include links to writing samples or an online portfolio with your resume and cover letter.
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills, including a working knowledge of AP style.
  • Attention to details and experience working in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and to be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to travel, particularly in the months before and during New York’s legislative session (October through June).
  • Have a basic knowledge of graphic design principles, and some experience working with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.
  • A working knowledge of Zoom and Microsoft Teams is required.
  • Prior social media experience is a plus.
