The Baltimore Hospitality Academy provides free training for Baltimore city residents to become cooks, server/bartenders, housekeepers, & cashiers. Attendees who successfully complete these training programs are guaranteed a unionized job, & we provide ongoing case management to help them succeed at their new jobs. We work in partnership with UNITE HERE Local 7 (Baltimore’s hospitality workers’ union) & unionized employers who participate in Local 7’s training fund (i.e., Horseshoe Baltimore, Hilton Baltimore, John Hopkins University, Sodexo at Morgan State, & more).

We’re seeking an Outreach Coordinator to work with Local 7 members & staff to develop a network of community allies to recruit un-employed/under-employed Baltimore city residents who are interested in a career in hospitality.

Job Responsibilities

  • Builds and maintains relationships with partner organizations (churches, community groups, etc.) to identify and recruit trainees
  • Leads information sessions about upcoming trainings
  • Works closely with trainees to help them successfully complete their training program, begin employment at their new union job, and succeed once employed
  • Advocates on behalf of trainees and their families for services, basic needs, and other related issues; works with community partners to maximize the assistance for trainees
  • Helps refer trainees to appropriate assistance (i.e., housing support, arranging transportation to and from their new job, etc.).
  • Prepares correspondence, case notes, narrative and technical reports, notifications, and related documents for record keeping
  • Maintains a well-organized electronic and paper filing system
  • Timely responds to emails, texts and phone calls from trainees, employers, and community partners
  • Handles phone calls, member visits, and interaction with staff in a respectful and effective manner

Position Details

  • Hours of work and days vary; a flexible work schedule and a reliable car is required. Travel is expected, both during the day and at night in and around Baltimore. Occasional travel to Philadelphia also required.

Experience, Educational, and Availability Requirements

  • A high school diploma
  • Experience in a related or equivalent field is preferred (i.e. social service, youth work, advocacy). Community and/or union labor organizing experience is a plus. Experience in hospitality (hotels, industrial food service restaurants, casinos, etc.)  is also a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrates empathy.
  • Ability to operate spreadsheets, including Excel, is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must work with a strong sense of urgency, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Can engage social media

Salary:  $48,000-$53,000 range commensurate with experience. UNITE HERE Local 7 offers exceptional benefits, including: family medical, dental, vision and prescription coverage with no employee premiums; retirement funds (401k and pension); and generous paid time off.
