The Illinois Council of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is currently seeking candidates for the position of Receptionist in the Springfield office.  AFSCME Council 31 is a statewide labor organization representing public service workers in a wide variety of fields—including health care, public works, public safety, education and human services.  The Receptionist is responsible for greeting all visitors to the Council office and ensuring that each visitor is directed to the appropriate office or contact person.  The Receptionist is also responsible for responding to all incoming calls to the Springfield office and directing them to the appropriate staff member and/or taking messages as needed.  The Receptionist also assists with office tasks, such as data entry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greeting visitors
  • Connecting visitors with appropriate Council staff members
  • Responding to all incoming phone calls
  • Directing calls to the appropriate staff person
  • Taking messages when staff members are not available
  • Data entry


  • Knowledge of standard office practices, procedures and equipment
  • Competence in basic data entry
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Ability to communicate clearly
  • Ability to respond courteously and professionally to phone calls and assess urgency
