The union has approximately 425 staff in sixteen offices from Boston to Miami. 32BJ SEIU represents over 175,000 property service workers including janitors, security officers, airport workers, and food service employees in 11 states and Washington, D.C. 32BJ is an affiliate of SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, which has 2 million members dedicated to raising industry standards and making life better for all working families and communities.

We are seeking a Field Representatives to work in the Philadelphia area with our 2,500 members in the security and university sectors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Field Representative performs a range of duties, which may vary according to the needs of the overall program, a specific action or campaign, etc. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Identifying and developing worksite leaders;
  • Identifying and developing Shop Stewards and/or building leaders in all assigned sites
  • Ability to lead, motivate and inspire members to develop into leaders and participate in key union programs (i.e. political, growth, bargaining, etc.)
  • Ability to take initiative and be creative in developing new roles for members within the union and provide the support needed to be successful.
  • Identify and process grievances to insure delivery of services to members;
  • Create strategic work plan and calendar designed to meet division goals;
  • Must be able to organize their time effectively, and develop and carry out plans with minimal supervision. Must also be able to receive direction from and interact positively with program directors and supervisors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Working knowledge and understanding of collective bargaining and contract administration issues;
  • An understanding of member representation and campaign work, including field representative or organizing experience;
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage and prioritize work subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment, both individually and as a team member;
  • Strong and effective verbal and written communications skills and presentation skills;
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office and the ability to learn and utilize internal organizing software and apps;
  • Strong interpersonal skills; experience and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds, including union staff at all levels;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and labor movements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This position is a full time position that regularly requires hours outside normal business hours, including nights, weekends and holidays as the campaign requires.
  • This position is based in the Philadelphia, PA office.
  • This position requires travel to worksites and events.
  • Valid driver’s license and car with insurance required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs, walk through large work sites, and participate in marches and demonstrations that can be at least three to four hours in duration.
  • Some overnight travel to other East Coast locations may be required.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
The salary for this role is $60,486.05. 32BJ offers a generous benefits package that includes a fully employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan (for full-time employees and their qualified dependents) and retirement benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. 32BJ offers paid time off including three weeks’ vacation, eleven holidays, twelve sick days, and, after the first year of service, four personal days.
