The Communications Specialist is a key member of the Union’s communications team, responsible for communications in New Jersey. Candidates should have a deep knowledge of and relationships with New Jersey media and local reporters. Candidates should be creative thinkers, capable and skilled multi-taskers, who can utilize a range of communications tools to help advance our strategic organizing, political and contract campaigns. Candidates should also be capable of working independently in the 32BJ Newark office and work well with the New Jersey district office team. Spanish-speaking candidates are especially encouraged to apply. The Communications Specialist reports to the Deputy Communications Director.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working with the Deputy Communications Director to drive and execute communications plans throughout the New Jersey region, including media relations, and new media;
  • Initiating contact with and responding to inquiries from print, radio, and television journalists; pitching story ideas and providing information to generate positive media coverage in the region;
  • Building relationships with labor, immigration, political and other key media in the New Jersey region;
  • Writing news advisories, news releases, background pieces, message documents and other press materials for campaigns;
  • Managing social media sites and producing content, including memes, copy for posts, and short videos for Twitter, Instagramm, and Facebook campaigns;
  • Strategizing and implementing new media components into campaigns, including concepts for microsites, Twitter, Facebook and email outreach;
  • Training and developing members for public speaking;
  • Other duties as required.


  • Two to three years of experience in the field of journalism, or communications in labor, politics or advocacy organizations;
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Outstanding writer, able to create strong press releases, message documents and media strategy memos;
  • Familiarity with digital media tools and openness to expanding skills in this area;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice, especially work with union members, low-wage and immigrant communities;
  • Experience creating communications for union or organizational members on advocacy campaigns preferred;
  • Ability to work independently, handle multiple priority projects and meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness and flexibility in approach to project assignments and planning


  • This position is a full time position that may require hours outside normal business hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
  • This position is based in the Newark, New Jersey office.
  • This position requires travel to worksites, events and occasional member meetings.


  • This position is largely computer/office based, with many in-person and Zoom meetings as well as events.
  • This position requires traveling to worksites/events and participating in events, marches and demonstrations.

The salary for this role is $80,000 – $84,000. 32BJ offers a generous benefits package that includes a fully employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan (for full-time employees and their qualified dependents) and retirement benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. 32BJ offers paid time off including three weeks’ vacation, eleven holidays, twelve sick days, and, after the first year of service, four personal days.
