Position Overview
Teamsters Local 890 is pleased to announce the position of temporary Union Representative – Central Coast California to be filled as soon as possible.

This position is temporary with an opportunity to become permanent. The job of Union Representative offers a unique opportunity to represent private sector workers employed throughout the Monterey Peninsula, Salinas Valley, and surrounding areas. The Union is currently seeking to fill this position. The position will be responsible for representing the interests of Teamsters Local 890, its officers, members and staff at all times with employers, state federations, area labor councils and central labor councils, affiliates and constituency groups and will report to the Principal Officer, or designee.

Union Representatives are considered ‘at will – exempt’ in that they may supervise and train activists; have access to confidential information; have input to management positions for internal and external union operations; and exercise independent decision-making authority.

Description of Duties

  • Work independently with little to no supervision representing members in the areas of wages, benefits and working conditions; Prepare and present grievance and arbitration cases as the principal Union advocate
  • Open and renew expiring contracts independently as the principal Union advocate
  • Assess, and train union stewards and communication team members who can assist members in solving problems on the job through contract enforcement and direct action
  • Implement the Local’s year-round member mobilization and communication
  • Welcome new members and provide in person orientation with emphasis on building a stronger union
  • The ability to work independently, solve problems, manage time and priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, take direction & support elected union leaders
  • Prepare and submit regular reports as required
  • Support the development of contract campaign planning and execution; may act as a co-negotiator in bargaining other contracts if need

Minimum Requirements

  • 3 to 5 years of experience representing workers in the labor movement. Experience with private sector bargaining units preferred but not required. Prior NLRB knowledge desirable.
  • Experience working for International Brotherhood of Teamsters or experience serving as a Teamsters delegated shop steward
  • College degree in labor-related field, OR extensive experience and demonstrated ability in labor relations, labor organizing or related work
  • Strong public speaking skills and experience communicating union messages a must
  • Computer proficiency with email, internet, word processing and Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish; Excellent listening, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours and sometimes on weekends
  • Ability to travel as needed, and for extended periods
  • Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and automobile for business use is required
  • Team player is a must but also self-confident in working alone in large groups of people.

Compensation
Teamsters Local 890 offers, medical, dental, vision, and life insurance will be offered. An auto allowance and gas card will be provided.
