With over 1.4 million members, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is the nation's largest public service labor union and a leader in the fight for social and economic change. AFSCME Council 3 represents 30,000 workers throughout the state including university staff at MD’s public universities, correctional officers, social workers, clerical support staff, nurses, and road maintenance workers. We organize in the workplace and fight for dignity, respect, and a fair standard of living for all public service workers in MD.

We are accepting applications for a Political Organizer. This position is responsible for building the Council’s political program. This person will be responsible for building a statewide member team to elect politicians who support workers, pass legislation that improves public services, increase participation in the union’s political action committee and hold politicians accountable.

The Job:

  • Foster recruitment and training of a network of members who elect and hold accountable politicians who will fight for public services and workers.
  • Mobilize members for lobby nights and bill hearings in Annapolis to impact legislation important to AFSCME members.
  • Track and attend legislative hearings and prepare members to testify.
  • Help develop and execute Council’s statewide political plan.
  • Lead organizer for PEOPLE, AFSCME’s political action committee, which includes working with local unions to set goals and increase participation in PEOPLE.
  • Conduct site visits and house calls and attend union meetings to identify issues and increase engagement in the union’s political program.
  • Building a cadre of members who will organize around municipal, county, and statewide elections.
  • Help develop and execute the candidate recruitment and endorsement processes.
  • Develop relationships with community partners and allies.
  • Work with the Council 3 team to advance all the union’s goals.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 1-3 years of successful political and/or organizing experience.
  • Ability to articulate how a union works.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and coordinate activities that build power.
  • Experience with working in diverse communities and in a multi-cultural work environment. Sensitivity to and appreciation of ethnic and cultural differences a must.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and members.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual – English and Spanish a plus!
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs, Zoom, Voter Action Network, Slack, Hustle, and other social media platforms.
  • Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours and weekends. Some travel required. Reliable car and valid driver’s license a requirement.

We offer a salary range of $55,000 - $75,000 (commensurate with experience), car allowance, excellent health benefits, 3 weeks paid vacation, 15 paid holidays, 12 sick days, pension, optional 401k, life insurance, staff union and great working environment.
