NYSUT is a statewide labor organization affiliated with more than 1,200 local unions, each representing its own members, and is affiliated with two national unions, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the National Education Association (NEA). NYSUT represents more than 600,000 people who work in, or are retired from, New York's schools, colleges, and healthcare facilities, including teachers, teacher aides and assistants, college and university faculty and professional staff, school bus drivers, custodians, secretaries, cafeteria workers, doctors, nurses and healthcare technicians. The successful candidate should have a commitment to the labor movement and its members.

Based at NYSUT Headquarters in Latham, New York the successful candidate will actively contribute to the analysis, design, and implementation of social justice strategies and approaches, working closely with the Director of Social Justice and the Secretary-Treasurer to ensure positive impact and sustainable results. The NYSUT Social Justice Program works on a broad range of matters including education and enlightenment around matters of Social Justice. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion with a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regard to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance.


  • Lead day to day outreach and engagement with committees, NYSUT Statewide Regional Offices, Union Leaders, Members, and their communities.
  • Oversee the overall projects and initiatives.
  • Attend social justice events statewide to build networks and relationships.
  • Be able to have effective conversations while navigating difficult topics.
  • Develop educational materials for awareness of social justice topics.
  • Provide training and technical assistance for social justice programs.
  • Identify social justice issues as opportunities for organizing and engaging members.
  • Work on the overall implementation and execution of Social Justice mission.
  • Launching and manage initiatives and ensure they are sustained and delivering value to our Members and their communities.
  • Ensure projects align to strategic initiatives, plan across multiple projects, and develop measurable project goals.
  • Build and maintain relationships, influence key partners, and deliver results in a collaborative environment.
  • Create and maintain program resources for training purposes and knowledge management.
  • Familiarity with grant writing and management.
  • Maintain approved social justice resources on website and other digital platforms.
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Be committed to the process of life-long learning and demonstrate a desire for continuous professional self-improvement and knowledge attainment.


  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five (5) years of professional experience; with at least two years in relevant positions including social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion and multi-cultural communications
  • Strong writing, communication and presentation skills, and ability to communicate effectively, including with senior leaders
  • High level of proficiency with Office 365, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
