The Texas Climate Jobs Project seeks a dynamic and passionate Communications Director who will help plan and execute a comprehensive, statewide strategic communications plan to support labor unions, climate groups, and community organizations to advocate for climate action and good jobs in Texas.

Overview of the Organization
The mission of the Texas Climate Jobs Project is to advance a pro-climate, pro-worker agenda in Texas. Through innovative research and policy development; popular education; community engagement; advocacy; and strategic coalition building and partnerships, Texas Climate Jobs Project is engaging in collective action to win substantive policy changes that both protect the climate and create good local jobs.

Texas Climate Jobs Project is part of Fair Shot Texas, a nonprofit founded by the Texas AFL-CIO and labor unions across the state to advance a working families policy agenda in Texas.

The Job
The Communications Director responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic Communication Planning: Develop a long-term comprehensive communications strategy to support ongoing campaign and advocacy work across the state.
  • Campaign Leadership: Provide ongoing campaign support to staff by securing news coverage, drafting talking points, press releases, digital content, advisories, fact sheets, rapid response materials, and provide press and communications training and workshops to union members and other allies.
  • Prioritizing Worker Voice: The voices of working people can be powerful catalysts for change. The communications director will develop innovative ways to lift up the voices of union members and impacted workers in all of our public communication.
  • Donor Development: Develop a fundraising plan to generate a statewide fundraising plan to secure the resources necessary to support our ongoing organizing and advocacy.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as needed

Primary Characteristics and Experience
The Texas Climate Jobs Project Communications Director should be a seasoned communications professional, a passionate advocate for a progressive economic agenda, and a deep believer in the power of unions to lead on economic and climate issues with bold, transformative solutions. The position will be based in our Austin office with occasional travel to other Texas cities.

In addition, the Communications Director should have:

  • Three to five years of strategic communications experience in a labor, climate, or community advocacy setting;
  • Proven ability to build relationships with reporters, experience on the record, and history of successful rollouts and securing positive news coverage;
  • A track record of success in building digital audiences and digital fundraising;
  • Strong writing skills, with an interest in learning about a wide range of issues and the ability to convey and translate complex information for a variety of audiences;
  • A working to advanced knowledge of NGP, ActBlue, prominent digital platforms, and digital graphic design;
  • An ability to work independently and juggle multiple priorities;
  • A working knowledge and demonstrated commitment to the labor movement;
  • Knowledge of the Texas landscape for social and political movements is a plus;
  • Critical thinking and ability to think strategically about building and exercising power;
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal and listening, writing, outgoing presentation, and the passion and presence to be a dynamic leader and connect with diverse audiences;
  • Ability to travel to different areas of the state;
  • A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep interest in local policy, politics, and government;
  • Flexibility and potential to excel in a fast-paced, quickly-evolving campaign movement that has a diverse and invested group of stakeholders.

Salary: Minimum $71,000, with potential adjustments upward depending on experience. Excellent benefits including healthcare, retirement, and paid leave.
