Communications Coordinator

United Campus Workers (CWA Local 3865) is Tennessee’s higher education union, a wall-to-wall, non-majority union that includes full and part-time staff, faculty and graduate workers coming together to fight for economic and social justice on campus and across Tennessee. UCW is affiliated with the Communications Workers of America (AFL-CIO, CLC) and has a current membership of over 2,200 faculty, staff, and graduate workers at Tennessee’s universities and community colleges. Despite no union recognition, collective bargaining, payroll deduction, agency fee, or robust representation rights, UCW of Tennessee is punching far above our weight, increasing our membership while securing victories against well-heeled enemies.

The Executive Board of UCW-CWA Local 3865 believes that communication with our rank-and-file members internally as well as communication of our work and victories externally is one of our most important tasks as a union. As such, UCW seeks to hire a Communications Coordinator. This position may be located anywhere in the state, and is responsible for coordinating UCW’s communications materials and engaging members’ in the process. The Communications Coordinator works closely with the organizers, members, and local officers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Convene a Communications Committee comprised of union members
  • Coordinate with organizers, members, and membership management coordinator
  • Attend staff and membership meetings
  • Create and coordinate twice yearly membership newsletter
  • Maintain and update UCW’s website and social media
  • Develop consistent branding on messaging on all printed and digital materials
  • Design and order UCW merchandise items like t-shirts, hats, stickers, etc.

Requirements for this Job

  • Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills
  • Organization, attention to detail, and ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Experience with design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva, or other such programs
  • Basic computer skills like MS Office, Zoom, Email and Google Suite
  • Dedication and commitment to social justice and the labor movement
  • Ability to work independently and be accountable to a team
  • Access to functioning internet, a computer, and a phone

Preferred Experience for this Job

  • Previous work history of supporting a union
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience with technology applications, website maintenance, design, etc.

Salary and Benefits:
This is a part-time position that requires 10 hours per week, with possibility for more. Compensation is $25 per hour, with earned paid sick and vacation time.
